Input on gun $ and situation

Post by jfields »

Just wondering what this gun is worth and your thoughts on the situation. I know it isnt worth much , But thought it might be a good starter gun for my son to deer hunt with.its a H.R single shot 30 06 with a 3x9 scope. The guy wants $100 Im sure its worth that , just wondering if it would suit my purpose. I think a 30 06 is a little rough to start out with but the guy said thats what he used it for and it being a single shot insured the boy didnt tear loose and taught him shot placement. My boy is only 6 years old but handles a 410 pretty well. Whats your thoughts on the situation.

The 30-06 is a good cartridge, but I think that would be way too much recoil for a kid.Heck,I know of several adults that it would be too much for and beings it is a single shot makes it worse. The rifle wouldn't have enough weight to suck up some of the recoil.I believe a 243 would better serve your purpose.IMO

Too much gun for a six year old. I killed a deer with a 410 slug this year. dropped like a rock.

I think a 30-06 is too big for a youngster, it could cause him to be gun shy or to learn bad habits like flinching or shutting his eyes. I got my son a Rossi .simgle shot .223 and hes killed both bucks that he has shot at. and itss a good target gun and the shells are not too high. JMO

.30-06 is an excellent caliber. It is time-tested and proven in both the field and the military. HOWEVER, it is, in my opinion, not a caliber for a six year old. Probably not even for a twelve year old. The recoil is simply too much. A lot of damage could be done that would take a long time to repair, flinching, etc. If he's got a .410 already, let him shoot some slugs. From the proper range, that is a deadly combo. You know your son best, but I'm telling you, I would be very, very cautious of letting him shoot a .30-06, especially in such a lightweight rifle. If you want to buy the gun, and it does seem like a good deal, buy it and put it up for him until he is a teenager. Just my .02.

buy the gun and you can get another barrel for it. if you go to graybeards fourm they are always selling smaller cal. h&r barrels on there for around 100.00 or a bit more.
