What will grow in poor yellow clay soil ?

Post by dave404 »

Guys, I have a long point on top of the hill behind my house. it has an old road thru it and I would like to get something growing to provide food for the wildlife.
It now has some burr oaks and a few pine trees, huckleberry bushes.
what can I do to amend the soil, fert. lime ? its yellow clay dirt.
how will white clover or a wildlife mix do ?

Get it tested, to see what it needs.it may even have something toxic to plants! If it checks out ok, amend it as needed! Some clover may grow, try lespadeza!

I agree; get it tested. Most clovers seem to do well in clay. I don't have much experience with lespadeza.

Well, I kinda changed location some. Spent a day cutting out underbrush where better soil is.
Used the underbrush for brushpiles.
I applied lime and fertilizer. I sowed 3 type of clovers and a 40 lb. bag of wildlife mix from tsc.
today we're getting some rain so hopefully it will come up.

Not to be picky, but you're better off making your own mix rather than buying pre-packaged. They want something to grow and show for your efforts so the mix several different seeds. Problem is seeds require different planting depth. You can mix wheat and peas or oats and peas and plant the 1-1/2" to 2" deep and then come back and broadcast clover. I usually seed clover just before a rain and let the rain get it to the right depth--about 1/4". Keep us posted how things are growing.

I spent part of the day building brush piles. I used the stacked logs that they recommend in their diagrams. I'll cover it with brush/tops tomorrow. I also want to add a few salt blocks.
