I HAVE TO AGREE HERE,I DON'T THINK IT IS POSSABLE FOR A DOG TO BEAT ME JUST BECAUSE IT IS AN INCH TALLER.IF THE DOGS ARE EQUAL.13 IN RUN AGAINST 15 IN ALL THE TIME AND WIN. J M O

I would have to agree i dont think a inch here or there makes a difference in a hour but it still is a rule violation to run a hound over 15 inches. So the way i see it if you run a big hound than there would be no reason if in a cast one day the judge gives his buddy a extra mark here or there on the score card and lets him win you should get mad about it it is just a rule violation.

Here is some food for thought. when will guys start using inhumane way to keep their dogs from standing under height stands. When Everett Morgan started the arha, I believe he wanted to it to be a format for dogs we take hunting. This I believe for the most part has been accomplished. He set rules for size of beagles, not to be registered, but to enter a trial. No where do I believe it says if a dog is over 15 he's not a beagle. Maybe NkC should up the size for now to 16" for entering a trial. We are using better feeds with more nutrition. Dogs should be getting bigger as time progresses.
Changing the rule on the size of the hound would fix the problem. However until it is done we will always have this trouble at every hunt. All that i am saying is as long as they let it go it will cause dogs that are 15"or less to be beat by bigger dogs that are disqualified later in the hunt. Not all the time but sometimes this will happen as it did at the world hunt this year.
I agree , dogs that were DQ'd should have been before the hunt ever started after that they shouldn't have been at all .saux1 wrote:Changing the rule on the size of the hound would fix the problem. However until it is done we will always have this trouble at every hunt. All that i am saying is as long as they let it go it will cause dogs that are 15"or less to be beat by bigger dogs that are disqualified later in the hunt. Not all the time but sometimes this will happen as it did at the world hunt this year.
I guess as long as you're losing no one cares

There were also some other very good points made and some very pitiful points in this thread as well . I wonder sometimes if people ever go back and read what they write

The idea of allowing 16" hounds would not work either. How long until 16 1/4" hounds are going to try and make it. The only concern I have is the differences in who measures the dog. I have seen 15 1/4" beagles measured in by one judge and a trrue 15" beagle not make it by another. I don't care to give up an inch or even 2. If my dog can move a rabbit he can do it at 14" as fast as a 15". I have seen many times a 13" beagle run circles around a 15 1/2" beagle, especially on hard scent days. I say as long as it is a beagle and not a fox hound
, let them hunt!

NKC is gonna have to step up and fix this. Like Golden Acres said, who wants to call out a friends hound ? I have always said that we in little pack are running check dogs, no points for speed and drive. One or two inches is not gonna beat you in a check ! I know rules are rules but NKC is gonna have to do it, not us.
BTW I don't run big hounds, my best is a 13 1/2" female. Dave
Saux1, good point, eight hounds were beat by the two DQ'ed in the second round, what if ?

SUCCESS- When preparation and opportunity cross paths!
If you all don't mind a dog a little over 15" then is it okay to not score a minus on a mouthy hound that made it 2 rounds? Rules are rules, if you let one slip then someone else wants another rule to be more relaxed. I say go by the rules and if it states that a hound can be measured late in the hunt then let them be measured. The handler will then fix the problem, get hounds that are under 15". JMHO Paul

measuring hounds
ONE THING WE HAVE TO REMEMBER IS THAT THERE IS A LITTLE BOOK CALLED RULES AND ALL OF US HAVE TO GO ALONG WITH THAT. I WAS AT A HUNT DOWN SOUTH AT THE END OF MY CAST MY DOG PLACED 3RD AND I ASKED THE JUDGE ABOUT THE COUPLE OF CHECKS MY DOG DID NOT GET AND HE TOLD ME THAT MY DOG DID NOT MOVE IT FAR ENOUGH IN THE RULES I THINK IT SAYS MAKE FORWARD PROGRESS. SO WE ALL HAVE TO GET ON THE SAME PAGE. AND REMEMBER IT IS ALL FOR FUN, AND FREINDS AND GOOD TIMES PS. I WAS TOLD THAT BILL BREDIMIERS DAD WOULD WALK AROUND THE WORLD HUNT AND JUST MEASURE DOGS RIGHT THEIR NUMBER DOWN AND DQ THEM BEFORE THE HUNT.

Re: measuring hounds
The AKC SPO trials allow pre-measuring of the hounds before the trial begins. They separate their classes by sex and size unlike the ARHA.
It is YOUR CHOICE to have the hound measured early or later but all dogs in the winners pack MUST be measured.
The morning of the trial, a beagler has the option to pre-measure. For example if he has a hound real close to 13 inches, he can pre-measure that hound and run it in what ever class it measures into. If he CHOOSES NOT to pre-measure that dog and say runs it in the 13 inch male class that dog makes winners pack and measures 13 1/8th, then they go home, dog disqualified. Had he measured that morning, he wouldn't have to be measured again. Also, if he wanted to run in the 13 inch class but the dog measured big that morning, the owner has the right to a refund OR to run the dog in the 15 inch class. His choice, as it should be! Its not right to take a persons money, then measure a dog and refuse a refund if the dog is too big like I saw someone suggest. Now if that dog runs all day and measures out in the winners pack, there is no refund.
The way I see it is size has nothing to do with speed or ability. One of the fastest dogs I ever saw was a tiny little 13 inch female. She could flat smoke a rabbit! One of the slowest dogs I ever saw was a BIG male that was pushing the 15 inch mark and was traditional brace bred. He was like watching a mechanical toy with low batteries, lol.
Now I can see the measuring at an ARHA trial work by having the dog measure as it is entered. The club can assign two people to measure the dogs (two will help keep it honest). They can preset a measuring stand to lock on at 15 inches and measure where the trialers can all witness. If the dog measures under the bar, he is in. If he measures over, his actual measurement is recorded using a separate measuring stand and the measurement is sent in with that hounds name and registration number to the NKC. If a hound measures big more than three times in a year, he is banned from all future events. I suggest three times in a year because not all judges are going to measure to the same point. I have a male that measures 14 1/2 half inches every time I measure him at home. At the AKC field trials, he has measured anywhere from 13 1/4 to 15 7/8ths. The three times in a year would allow for human error without eliminating a hound from all competition. On the other hand if he measures 15 1/4 three trials in a row, you know he isn't going to measure under at the 4th trial.

This is the way the UKC does it No problems ever at one of thier events with oversize DogsNow I can see the measuring at an ARHA trial work by having the dog measure as it is entered. If a Dog measures over you get your Money back and Go home..
NOW you also have the option ov having it measured by another Judge also if there is any Question.
From Field to Show and Show to Field the way it should be
I'm not saying that the rules are perfect, or that I agree with them. However, ya'll knew what the rules were before you drove to the world hunt. These rules have been this way for how long now? You've had how many years to try and change them? I guess what I'm trying to say is, why does this stuff always come up after a BIG HUNT, when the rules have been this way for years, all year long?
If you MUST burn our flag, please wrap yourself in it first.

This is why I feel they should measure the dog with his head down.
His shoulders or withers are only one height. I feel the variances are from people measuring up the backside of the neck.
This is not Rocket Science.
You are trying to measure running gear wether the dogs head is up or down it is not going to change his bone structure from his foot to his shoulder.
