rule
Good discussion guys, AV Spencer I knew you and the Preacher knew the answer, I have run under both of you guys as judges and you both do an excellent job. It is pretty simple but you would be surprised at how many people get confused by this rule.

While I was at school tonight I read over the rule just to make sure and I was wrong in my first post.........Sorry to anyone I scored wrong
It's only 10 points anyway
....lol,j/k
I had a situation Sat. on a cast where I was looking right at 2 dogs that were hunting in a briar patch with their heads touching when the rabbit jumped and I couldn't tell witch of the 2 jumped it. There was a dog hunting on the other side of the path that seen the rabbit and let out 3 barks. I couldn't give a jump so I had to strike the dog that opened 3 times first even though he had no part in jumping the rabbit. That was the only way I could see to score it. Was this the right or wrong?

well brew what i woulda probably done here hmm lets see.. since i dint know which dog jumped it and i assume the race was on quick then when the other dog did bark was went from 1st break down on checks cause i wouldnt feel the dogs outside did anything to promote the race or show he was a good rabbitt dog.but this is a very tuf one really would have alot to do with the judge seeing the 2 dogs jump it with seeing that the dog outside wouilda surely got the strike!

I don't know who AV Spencer or Preacher are but I'm glad they were able to help everyone out on Big Dog's question. After reading some of your guys responses now i know why non hunting dogs (like dog A) win casts and even hunts. A jump is when a rabbit is jumped by a dog. A strike is when a dog bark 3 times on a track and a judge feels that a rabbit has been produce. Keep these type of discussions coming, it only make ARHA LP, judges and handler better.

In ref. to Mike Crabtree's original post, Chris Herpin, Av Spencer and Preacher Kennels got it right again. My question to all that posted answers to both Mike Crabtree's & Big Dog's questions, is why is everyone afraid to give a dog jump points. If you and a buddy go hunting and your dog goes into a thicket and a rabbit comes out, while your buddy's dog is doing who knows what, are you not going to caim that your dog jumped the rabbit. Food for thought.

Re: Little Pack judging ?
I'm still puzzled on this, how could you score a jump and the dog not know he jumped it?Even if he didn't bark,he should have shown some signs that he knew it was there.I asked you earlier if at anytime before barking on the line if he left the thicket,at all?mike crabtree wrote:In a 2 dog cast dog A goes in a small thicket and jumps rabbit out, but doesnt know it right away. 30 or so seconds pass and Dog A gives mouth back where the rabbit came out and runs the rabbit to the hole. Dog B the only other dog in the cast was not in the area.
How would you score this?
I don't feel scaring a rabbit out is the same as a jump unless the dog has given me some kind of sign that he knew it jumped but just hasn't pin pointed it out yet.
I have to ask a question to you as the judge, what would have been scored if when seen rabbit sneaking out,and "him not knowing it jumped right away" the other hound jumped a rabbit?
I'm not saying mike you made a bad decision i was not there but in this case(where the dog gave no mouth) i feel as a judge unless you seen the dog visually jump this rabbit from his sitting position, and the rabbit sneaking out and it taking 30 or so seconds for him to realize it,that the rabbit flushed scared before the hound got close to it and you would have been open for a strike only.I see this as being no different then a judge or handler jumping a rabbit and leaving it open for a strike but no jump.
If we as judges are going to score jumps everytime a hound goes thru a thicket and a rabbit sneaks out the other side and he don't know he jumped it,then we are in trouble.
Before anyone thinks i don't want the jumpdog scored you are bad wrong,i keep hard hunting dogs that know how to jump a rabbit and want them to get credit for it on the scorecard but i don't think its right to give a jump to a dog for scaring a rabbit up.

thornie u cant split points sry.aint scareing a rabbit up flushing it from its setup??what its not a jump if the rabbit dont act scared lol???
lyn dog a was the dog that flushed it up i have seen this several times they jump it but when they went into a briar thicket but didnt know it right off i was lucky enuf to have seen the rabbir flush then another dog comes and smells it aND takes off he cant get a strike cause if the jump occurs 1st and u know which dog did it he gets jump strike points a reward for being a good hunter and not scared of the briars or thick stuff.!!
brew u cant score a jump everytime u r right sometimes they just hit a scent trail get on clock if it turns out positive u can give 10 for strike!
