I usually enter 2 dogs in UKC Beagle Hunts. 1 in the open class and then I usually enter a dog in the Champion class if I don't win my cast in the morning open class. Plus, I try to get some of my buddies to hunt some of my beagles in competition events.
The problem about entering an ARHA hunt is that because fellows have several dogs entered, they can not find judges and the hunt takes way too long to complete (in my opinion). I have been at ARHA LP hunts that only had around 20+ entries that started at 6AM and were still going on at 6PM. I can't waste all day waiting to go out on the 2nd round like that. My wife hates ARHA Little Pack hunts and she has been to over 1000 (no over estimate) dog events. We usually have puppies that need cared for and we just can't waste that amount of time.

HatterasBob wrote:The problem I see with this format is the inability to enter more then 1 dog. I would think that keeps the number down on the entries. I know if I had a choice of running ARHA LP or UKC, I would choose LP just because I have more then 1 dog I want to run. The other issue is know your rule book!!!!!!!!!! Otherwise you'll get beat with a pencil.
I don't see this as a negative necessarily. If you can only run 1 or 2 dogs, then you are most likely to bring the best in your kennel. It's nice to be able to enter several dogs at the LP trials, but too often I've seen people bring dogs that weren't really trial ready; they would use the trial to "test" the dog out. A Field trial is a place to compete the best against the best, not a testing ground for puppies that aren't deerbroken or started well. Not everyone does this, but it's happened alot.

As far as getting beat with a pencil, it may seem that way sometimes, but it's more a matter of beating yourself because you don't know when to question a rule, or how to score/call your dog when the others in the cast do, but like you say - learn your rulebook, lol.

Well, Bev I'm just lucky that I have more then 2 dogs that could win in either format. Last week I ran 4 and didn't place any, but one got picked up with less then 60 seconds left and he had 17 checks, plus some strikes. The time before that, that dog placed 6th in a tie with another dog of mine, and another took 2nd and another took 8th. It knid of depends on the day, the cover and what the judges see.

My 14 year old son got screwed by the judge in our first UKC hunt. The judge called strikes on my son's dog. My son's dog had a death bawl that was very unique. I asked him why he didn't protest, and his response was, I'm just a kid, who's going to believe me. A month later the same judge called a strike that was my dog. I did contest it and won. I understand that this is a single judge, but know the rules.

I like both formats, but i can only run 1 dog at a time in UKC unless my son comes and after his experience he doesn't really want to go to UKC hunts. Do you blame him?

Aww, bless his heart, that's too bad. Most of the beaglers I know in UKC would have rooted for the boy. What goes around comes around, ya know? Anybody crooked will get his one day.

What goes around comes around is the problem with judging in trials. Not saying you Bev, but some people think their dog wins every cast whether it did anything or not. I would hope Bob doesnt return the screwing, but gets enjoyment when he beats the guy fair and square.

I hope it isn't "that" kind of return, either, but he who shafts - gets shafted one day, whether it's dogs or business, etc. Just always seems to work out that way. I just hope when it happens the shafter gets what it feels like to be the shaftee..... I'm just sayin' ;)

Now guys I didn't say I got shafted. I don't know, but my dog had twice as many points as #2. #2 belonged to the club president. My dog got 2 deducts for pulling the pack, something I've never seen him do. His final deduct was for leaving the check area, which he did. He was on the clock working a trail and another dog jumped a hot rabbit and he went to it. I can't blame him. Now back at the club house 3 people pointed out what I stated above. They stated Boomer had killed the pack and when they picked him up the president's dog won. I'm slow, I didn't realize it myself. I would like to believe that the judges (3) thought he pulled the pack, twice. This weekend I was going to go to another trial, but decided to go to a retriever hunt test instead, probably because I still have a bad taste in my mouth. I like judging when I don't know any of the dogs, absolutely no bias.

I've been screwed before, so badly that the other judge apologized two week later. Said he didn't realize the hidden agenda of the other judge. I had to add him to my list of "STAY AT HOME JUDGES". I still keep going because I like it, and it's a hobby and it's NOT my job.

A hardworking, independent, honest and smart jump dog that stays tight on the line but has the gears to run as fast as scenting conditions allow without loosing the track for more than a minute is the best performer in UKC or for that matter - rabbit hunting. Top competitors in this will likely do a great job running solo or in a pack. Dan
