I have a male that is 14 3/4" and two females that are 13"

The male is fast on a big running rabbit.
If the brush is tight or the rabbit is cutting and diving, he has no advantage over the other two because it takes speed out of the equation.

One female is heavy framed and about a 4 or 5 on speed.
If you have big running, it hurts her. All she is doing is running with her head up trying to catch up.

The other female is small framed and quick, she doesn't have the "wheels" to run wide open with the male for a 20 minutes chase.

Silverzuk, you seem to be quite vocal on all these 15" threads. Are you the guy that called out a hound in the second round at the world hunt that eventually ended up in all hounds in the cast being measured and Randy Brown banned ? Just let it go and go run your dogs!

I don't think size matters that much, sure, I could see the difference of running a 13" or smaller against a 16" hound. But I have a little Pine Mt. bitch that matches my step-dad's 16 1/2" hound step for step. She is only 14 1/2 to 3/4". She has been running with him since she was nine months old. Even then, there wasn't a lot of speed diffenece. Sure at first he would just plain leave he in a dust trail. But didn't take her long to figure out, full throttle was the key. She began getting the checks infront of him at 10 months. At this time she was still under 13". And like stated earlier the speed advantage is taken away in running the thick stuff. If you really think about it a smaller hound should have an advantage on a bigger dog in briars and honeysuckle vines.

Guys hunt whatever size you like, but trial according to the rules.jmo....

I think we should leave the 15" standard.

I have no problem with size, feed and run what you want.
As far as a trial goes, rules are printed clearly.
It is up to the handlers at the casting stake to speak up about the size of hounds. That is the only "policing" for the height.
Just because you wouldn't call one out, don't expect that others won't apply the rules.

Yes, I called a dog out in the cast you are talking about.
It was obviously over 15".
If I remember correctly it measured 16.5"
Randy Brown asked for all of them be measured.
One other dog measured over 15".
Randy was banned for a cussing protest filed against him.
I felt bad that the dog he was handling was scratched because the cussing protest.

Ok, it's always nice to put a face with the names on here. Yes, rules are rules and I don't have a problem with people calling out dogs either. I do however find it amusing when people call out dogs,( eliminate the competition, JMHO ) and still don't win the cast.

That is the way it goes.
When we hopped out of the truck the judge said, "I can't believe they sent us here. We ran a cast in here yesterday and had no rabbits. Guys, there are no rabbits in here."

He was right.
The cast went on hunting and handling, the judges brought back the right dog, though none were hunting hard.
The winning dog got scratched because the handler was protested for cussing.
I felt bad for the owner of the hound that Randy was handling.

Was that you and your wife in the protest meeting?

No, we were spectators and were not at all involved in the protest.

CRAZY

Post by Pine Mt Beagles »

AT THE -K.Y.-STATE I SAW 12 INCH AND 17 INCH HOUNDS BUT THE ONLY SIZE THAT CAUGHT MY EYE WAS THE SIZE OF THE HOUNDS --HEART--IF MOST OF THE OWNERS WAS HALF AS GOOD AS THEIR HOUNDS IT WOULD BE A GREAT THING-HOWEVER I STILL CANNOT SEE WHY THAT A RULE WRITTEN BY NKC REGISTERY SHOULD BE IN FORCED BY THE HANDLERS THE BREED INSPECTOR OR ANOTHER OFFICIAL SHOULD HANDLE THAT---------JMO

I'm with you Jimbo........ Bring your walker hounds or your pocket beagles. At all the trials I have been to, size does not matter. I have been beat by 12 in. beagles more than I have by 15 1/2 beagles. Just enjoy what you got.
