Here is the scenario..

dog is in a briar thicket..size is about 20 foot by 20 foot..he is by himself. Hunting hard..opens several times..Judges put him on the clock. A few seconds later 2 small rabbits run from the thicket..all the hounds then join in the thicket and are searching hard.The judge sees the hound in there..the rabbits come out..the dogs bark here and there trying to run the small rabbits. The hounds never line the rabbits out and never show a line from the brush.

How do you score it?


This happened on a hunt and I questioned the call just want to see how others would score it. After a few responses I will tell you how it was scored.

If the dog went into the briars, by himself, opened up and two rabbits came out, regardless of size of the rabbit, strike and jump.

jump stirke as a matter of fact if the judge seen the jump he didnt even have to open to get the jump strike!that is an easy call!JUMP STIKE!

Depends on what registery. If it is UKC they minus.

At least strike , to my under standing just the presence of a hound cannot constitute jump.
I am no expert , that was the same call made on me a few weeks ago.

DUHHHH! If the judge seen the rabbits its automatic strike and jump.The rules dont say a rabbit has to be any certain size.The judge should have given the dogs time to try to figure the tracks out and score the checks accordingly untill he was certain no more forward progress could be made by the hounds.Now if the dogs split,thats a whole diffferent story.

In UKC. No Forward progress. Minus the Dogs...

NKC little pack, a 20 ft. briar patch is small, obviously the hound smelled the rabbits because he opened. His presence jumping them would have been if he was just hunting through and they came out and he never smelled them. Cut and dried, strike and jump. The only way strike only would have been more than one hound obviously working the same track and judge could not tell which made the rabbits move. This is judgment by what you see AND hear. plain and simple. I gave a hound a check once after a rabbit jumped off a dry, dusty road and went about 10 feet into a rock pile and one hound found where he left the road and showed progress to the rock pile. I don't think some judges would have scored this either for the same reason that someone may not score strike and jump with Brad's case because they have a "not far enough" mentality. If the hound did all it could do and was the only one of 5 that could, not fair to the 1 that could to say "not enough." To not score strike and jump is telling the owner of that hound that his hound, the only one in the briars, the only oen with a nose full of rabbit, is not doing any more than the others and that's bad judgment.

If it was the only dog in the thicket and the judge saw even one of the two rabbits its a plain stike and jump in my book. Some people need to refresh on the rules. Let us know how it was scored. I would like to know.

funny thing is I got a minus. another dog won the cast with a positive 10. I protested and they said the dog had to show line..if the rabbit came out even though they couldn't run it they couldn't give him credit for it. They keep saying he had to move it..I said I should at least get strike..the rabbit came out the dog was in there hunting and working hard..opened 3 times..was on the clock..I don't see how you could minus a dog for that.
It was a Little Pack hunt. Regardless I didn't win and they never overturned it even though I showed the rulebook that it says nothing about line just that a rabbit was produced by the hounds. I have seen many judges make the same call. If they open..and a rabbit jumps even though they are trying to run it..if they don't make a line..they are minused. It is different if they are just walking around and bump a rabbit and not know they did but hunting for it..opening and trying to run it is 2 different things in my book.
Just wanted to see if I was crazy for thinking that..and see if any other judges would minus the dog.

Strike Jump Brad.

That has to be one of the worst calls ive ever heard of.some people need to know the rules before they try to judge a cast of hounds.some of these hunts are getting to be a joke.

Bad deal, should have been at least a strike. Thats why I hate this time of year, little rabbits.
