Scratching a dog

Post by Buckeye Bob »

I need clarification on this.I have heard multiple scenarios and it is not spelled out clearly in the rules.
If I don't want a hound to win can I scratch before they run the final cast and retain any score.I was told that if I scratch him for any reason I get zero points and no placement.I have no problem with that at all and think it is fair. But after reading all this HOY manipulation stuff I am wondering how it is possible to hold a hound back from winning without blatent cheating by colluding with the judge. My reason for asking is I have only one dog in the opens with his win at the home club.I rarely get to travel to trials so I am stuck but could get 10 more points at home. However I don't want to enter him and have him place 1-5 and basically steal points from someone else, whether a buddy or someone that drove maybe for hours to get there.
The entire HOY discussion makes me scratch my head.I cannot relate to the gamesmanship that goes on in trialing so I will stay out of that debate only to add that some of you sound like my kids in the backyard playing "calvin-ball" ;)
Gotta go kill some rabbits!!!!!

If you feel like that about the gamesmanship, dont enter if you dont want to win. You would be doing the same thing on a smaller scale I would think.

If you scratch the dog you dont get any points.

Isnt the whole point to enter a trial to win. I dont ever enter a trial and say I hope I only finish 6 beacause I only need 10 points. If your dog was better than mine that day but you scratched him and allowed me to finish higher then you I would not accept it. I would be ashamed of winning if my dog wasnt better that day.

holding a dog back

Post by poormans2 »

i don't trial right now because my health won't allow me . but any way i feel if you have a dog that only need's 1 win to move up to the next class. and you take your dog to a hunt and he's going out for the last time . that day for 1 or 2 and you don't wan't him moving up because of the world coming up . and this happen's i've seen it so instead of scratching him to keep him a lower class. just leave him home that way the guy that got 6th may have gottin 5th and qualified for the world. if you bring him to a hunt and he's that good take your 1st and move up to the next class.

does the two hour rule apply in little pack? in other words, if the dog has run and won two rounds, can the dog be scratched from winners pack and still place? just curious, thanks

no. once you scratch your dog you forfeit all the points and placement for the day.

WHAT I DONT UNDERSTAND IS WHEN PEOPLE BRING A DOG TO A HUNT,THEN SIGN IT UP,AND THEN SCRATCH IT BEFORE THE DOGS ARE EVEN ROLLED OUT,WHY SHOULD THAT DOG GENERATE POINTS TOWARDS HOY?

SHOULDN'T THAT DOG ATLEAST BE REQUIRED TO RUN AN HOUR BEFORE IT IS CONSIDERED A POINT?

LET ME CLARIFY

EXAMPLE:

FRED IS RUNNIN OL BLUE FOR THE HOY,HE SHOWS UP WITH EVERY DOG IN HIS KENNEL,10 DOGS TOTAL,FRED SIGNS THE DOGS UP,THEN SCRATCHES ALL BUT OL BLUE,WELL THEN BLUE PLACES IN THE HUNT AND RECIEVES POINTS FOR THE 9 DOGS HE SCRATCHED,NONE OF THEM 9 EVER SHOWED UP TO THE STAKES OR EVEN WHERE GIVIN NUMBERS FOR THE ROLLING OF CASTS.

SHOULDN'T THEM 9 DOGS HAVE HAD TO AT LEAST SHOW AT THE STAKES OR IN THE FIELD TO BE COUNTED?

Exactly. There are some people out there with integrity that like to compete but are not hung up on trophies and bragging rights. These are the guys who can get beat without griping about getting cheated. They like to win, but can handle losing with grace. They don't need to toot their own horn.
