Being new to trialing I have not experienced all the formats. The ones I have experienced are the ARHA PP and AKC SPO. I feel that the PP dogs are far better hunting dogs :!: The SPO dogs are usually a little cleaner on the line but lack the desire that most of the good PP hounds show. If the SPO would give points to the hound that hunted the hardest and let them jump their own rabbits then SPO would be the better format in my book. I also would like to see SPO keep records of the points thatwere awarded. Also, they need to take away points for the hounds that run off game and pop off .

Good Points ARHA
#1 keep up with points
#2 reward a dog for hunting
#3 DQ for running off game [best rule in trials]
#4 Good people Good fellowship
Points I disagree with
#1 Hunter not allowed to hunt with his dog. I'm with my dog always when hunting, this does not mean sic em or encouraging it to hunt or talking to it just being there to watch would be my preference.
#2 A trailing dog can be minused for leaving a track if it goes to a jumped rabbit. How many HUNTERS would want their dog to continue to trail after a jump?
#3 Bound by One hour time limit. Some days you need more time.
I'm not an expert and don't go to many trials, I hunt most every day. These are just some of my observations.

I agree with all of the above.
I have been in SPO since the mid 70's and they have gone down hill in some of their events as far as type of dogs they are running and the Judging. ( Not all, but some)
I know too many AKC field champions that can not run their own rabbit. They need to start certification, and having champion classes to run in.
I have run in the ARHA PP for a short time and and enjoy the format for the most part. There is always room for improvement.
I enjoy being able to run at least an hour instead of a few minutes like in some SPO trials, after traveling hundreds of miles.
I am looking forward to some UKC trials now.

Th UKC Hound and Hunter format. The UKC promotes a jump dog and does not promote a babbler. You have a say in the way the dog is judged. Its not perfect but I get to handle my dog. The rules are a little gray in some areas but they are getting refined all the time. I enjoy trialing in the UKC because I handle ang have a say in the scoreing of the hounds and most of all I get to see the chase up close.
