My suggestion would be to put him on a lead, and shoot your gun and when he gets scared, pull him to you and pet him up and feed him a treat(perhaps a hotdog) or something meaty, and see if this helps.

I read about the pan trick in a book called, "American Beagling" by Glenn G. Black. Black published this book in 1949. If you don't have this book, I would highly suggest it for every beagler. There is something to say about the old ways of handling situations. The idea behind the pans and feeding is when a dog is eating it feels good; after awhile the noise and the feeding walk hand in hand. I wouldn't give up just yet. K

watch a show on espn on dog training from large proffesional trainers the old guy took the dog out in a boat not leashed used a 22 if i remember would shoot then give him treats i cant rememeber but he said his mind was on the water as a distraction the dog would not jump out in water the dog was tought boat, man and rifle were safe zone weird but this is what they did.

I HEARD OF PEOPLE TAKING THE GUN SHY DOG OUT TO A LAKE TO THE MIDDLE AND THE DOGS ARE IN THE BOAT.THEN YOU SHOOT YOUR GUN OFF.YOU HAVE THEM ON A LEASH AND IF THEY JUMP OUT THE BOAT,PULL THEM BACK IN AND KEEP DOING THIS TO THEY STAY IN THE BOAT WHEN YOU SHOOT.
