Bench legged = a fancy way to say your hound has crooked front legs and is most likely dwarfed

Have you ever seen tables and benches that had legs that curved "out" near the top and then "in" close to the floor.
Queen Anne style furniture.
Dogs that have front legs that look like the legs on this table.

In the '70s I owned a 13" male linebred Pearson Creek. His front legs looked like the front legs of the basset you see on the hushpuppy shoe ads. A bench-legged beagle looks like a bow-legged person from the front. His legs are bowed inward from the shoulder down, but turn out at the feet. He usually walks on what would otherwise be the inside of the foot, but it is turned forward so he walks on the side with the toes turned outward. This is a serious deformity. I became the owner of the hound I mentioned above because of this. He was S L O W but I was 12 years old and didn't mind a bit. Bench legs didn't affect brace trial hounds nearly as much as they would a hound that actually gets up and runs a rabbit. I couldn't imagine a hound as deformed as the one I had staying with a pack very well as he ages. I'm sure that he would also pass this trait on as well.

In 1884 the American Kennel Club was founded, as well as the first Beagle Specialty Club, the American-English Beagle Club. This Specialty Club was established by Philadelphia area breeders, a Standard was adopted and the breed rapidly changed from the "bench-legged" beagles (crooked forelegs) who were undoubtedly the result of crosses of the early imported beagles from England with Dachshunds.
