Mini Updates

Post by Budd »

For you that have the mini collars be sure your checking for updates for both collars and handhelds. I've already put 3 on mine since they hit the open market, one on my Alpha.

Do you need to update the collars seperate, or just update the alpha itself?

Do you guys with the Mini's have an issue with the collars twisting around the dogs neck? I can't seem to keep mine properly positioned. And worry about making them too tight. Never had the issue with the large collars.

There is new updates for both collars and Alphas. I put a zip tie both in front and behind the GPS module.

Here is how I rigged a couple of mine (collar on left). I have some spare full size collar antenna supports that I replaced the smaller one's with, trying to find more of the plastic clips that are on this one, using zip ties for now.

Yea I can't keep mine from twisting either. I'm gonna pull the strap out and run it the other way like

Toby. I'm Mike Franklin with OKIE DOG SUPPLY. If you handheld is turning off, it means you may have a corrupted file (this can happen for any number of reasons). I just recently experienced this with a customer that came to the store. What version does it say your HH is running (go to Setup, then scroll all the way to the bottom and press on About. The first line of the next screen, at the top, will tell you the software version). You should be on 5.30. If you HH says 5.30, then try reloading the software using Webupdater. You should NOT use Garmin express to update your system. The mini collars also have an update, so you do need to update those as well using Webupdater. If your unit continues to shut-down, you will need to do a master reset. Please note: sometimes a master reset will delete the dogs in your dog list. Sometimes (I've seen it happen in 3 customers). IF it deletes your dogs, just re-add them and then reconfigure your training buttons. Once the master reset is complete, then check your software version that it still says 5.30.

As for the collars twisting (spinning). Yes, that was an issue during testing but, it was greatly corrected. As Bud showed in his picture, using a zip-tie is a great idea. The antenna helps to counter-balance the weight of the collar. The spinning wasn't an issue on the big collars because the weight of the receiver (The brick portion of the receiver) was heavier than the rest of the items on the collar. In the minis, the receiver is smaller and lighter so the collar can sometimes be a bit top-heavy. But, when you zip tie the antenna it really helps with the spinning. Here at OKIE DOG SUPPLY, we reverse the way the collar strap is threaded, like Bud said. This means, the buckle ends up where the GPS satellite receiver is. What you are doing is adding weight (with the buckle) to the top part of the collar. I will tell you that it makes it a little harder then to zip tie the antenna because of the buckle, but what we do on our 9" beagle is we thread the antenna through the buckle. I realize a 9" beagle isn't the norm, but it's just an example for you to try. You can also use long contact points instead of the short ones. It helps hold the collar to the dog's neck. On my 9" beagle, I use the long contact points and a reversed collar strap (with the buckle by the GPS receiver) and thread the antenna through the buckle. It stops the spinning.

Hope this helps.

Updated my handheld and the collars 5.30. (Didn't realize there was another update. Just did one 2 weeks ago)
Hopefully that fixed it.
Thanks Mike
