He's looking great Ed !
Had him out running loose in the field? How's he act out of the kennel?
Lot of puppy still, he's curious for a bit then right back to nipping pants legs and laces... Makes it hard to walk!

We walk at dusk on my paths for now looking to bump into a bunny out for an early supper. He's found fire ant piles and a snake skeleton so far. We get back by the barn and he starts heading into some weeds... when Melissa says: Hey! Get outta there! I said that's not helping... :annoyed:

The bunnies here around the property know that they are safe as I have no pups to torment them with.
Kind of funny as I went to load up my dog box the other day two rabbits ran out from underneath my truck.
My wife thinks it's pretty funny that I load up my dogs to go run and have to drive past half a dozen bunnies on our own property.
I've got a great place to start a young pup but my grown dogs will take these rabbits once around the property and then head out where the road becomes a concern.
There were actually 3 bunnies together but I couldn't get the third one in the pic. with the telephoto.

Dana;

Did you get Keep Yourself a Pup litter mate to "Spit"?

I am going put that little fellow in the Starting Pen soon, he is beginning to settle down some, lots of playing in him.

Hey Daddy Rabbit
Hope all is well with you and your hounds.
For the first time since I started keeping my own hunting dogs [ 46 years ] I did not keep a pup out of this litter.
It was pretty hard not to keep one as I've never raised a litter just to sell. When I've raised a litter it was always because I wanted one.
I'm not a field trialer so I have no need to keep a kennel full of "up-and -comings" or derby dogs, all age, etc.
I have 4 grown females [3 I bred and 1 given to me as a pup by a good friend ] that are exactly the type of rabbit hound I want. And that's really all the dog power I need.
I hunt/ run alone about 95% of the time and I can comfortably handle all 4 of my dogs myself.I can also afford to feed, vet. costs, house and care for the 4 girls without too much hassle.
All 4 of my dogs get run several times a week; sometimes all together, sometimes braced up and sometimes solo.I've seen way too many houndsmen keep so many dogs that half of them seldom get out of the pen. I've NEVER kept more than 5 grown/ running hounds at a time and just figured that at this point in life that 4 was enough.
I bred Josie because I felt that crossed on to Spook they really had something to contribute [bettering the breed?] and the fact that 7 of the guys that got one of these pups already had a dog out of my breeding or have hunted with my dogs and they said they wanted another one.
My consolation as to not having one here to start is that all of you that have one are the kind of guys that will put them in the woods, give them opportunity and will let me know pros and cons as to how they are doing.Plus I'll end up hunting with several of you and these young dogs this season.
Best of luck with the pups and please continue to give up-dates, as a breeder of a litter that's the only way to know if one is on the right track.

I was nominated by one of them to take the 10 day challenge

Thought you all might enjoy seeing some of those old pics from the life of a beagler here. Don't be surprised--- you might get nominated!

Glad to hear that your pup and Mr. Gray's are doing well and acting right.Won't be that long before you can introduce them to some rabbits and see what that does for them.
Sure do like running the big swampers. They can test a dog and you can see what they are made of.Both these pics. taken years ago on hunting trips with good friends out in west Tennessee.
Will pray for success and a speedy recovery from your hernia surgery.

DR, good luck with your hernia surgery. I had two a few years ago and now they tell me that mesh reinforcement they used may qualify me for a big payday. BS! It may qualify an ambulance chaser for a big payday. Fortunately I have had no problem.
A couple months back a beagler contacted me about breeding his bitch to my stud. When he brought her ,he cautioned me about her weird/aggressive personality. I looked at her and she was very, very heavy, about twice or three times the weight that she should have been. I had no problem with her. Took her home, took her out of the box, and she was bred in about fifteen minutes. When I met him, to return his bitch, I told him that I had to check my health insurance before I got her out of the truck. Immediately he had a troubled look on his face, and he asked me if she tried to bite me. I said no she was fine, I was checking to see if my insurance covered hernia surgery. He got a chuckle out of that.
Praying your surgery will be fine and you to be back on your four wheeler soon, chasing the hounds.

Hey DR, I too want to wish you good luck and a fast recovery from your hernia surgery. Dang us ole guys have minds that say YES but bodies that say NO. I had a big tree limb fall onto me las summer when cutting fire wood that hit me on my left shoulder. I couldn't lift my arm so had to have an MRI and the specialist said it had destroyed my rotator cuff. Got through the surgery without a hitch and the physical therapy wasn't too bad either considering the surgeon said he didn't think I'd have 100% use again as bad as it was. I do not notice any difference at this point and am happy with that surgery. I wish you well.
