# of Lost Litters This Year

Post by MasonsBeagles »

I have talked to a couple of people that have lost whole litters this year. I lost one about two months ago and chalked it up as just bad luck. A friend of mine just had two females give birth and pups just died. Seemed like my litter the pups just didnt have the spark to them. Mothers were put on Puppy Chow early in the pregnancy. I already have a count of 7 whole litters gone. Is there something in the air or what. All dogs were Brucelosis tested along with the males prior to breeding so that is not it. All dogs were from different backgrounds/bloodlines bred to different males. Just odd to have so many lost litters. THought Id see who else has had this problem.

Will,

Try looking at common denominators. Weather, born inside or outside. What type of food was being fed. Pre-natal care. What type of wormers were being used, when. Etc.,.

Chickens around there? Did you give the 7 in 1 or the newer 8 and 1 shot?

Canine Herpes Virus is a possiblity. Here is a brief article on the subject.

A search on Google will turn up all knids of links on the subject. I know we lost a couple litters about 2 years ago too CHV. It is not that uncommon and often works its way through a whole kennel, producing a rash of unsucessful litters. In most cases a repeat breeding of a bitch goes just fine.

Canine Health Links. Here is a site that has a huge number of links on the subjuect, plus herbal treatments etc.

Will, it was me that lost a litter las spring on the other board. My Vet said it was a Staph infection. He gave me strong Oral antibiotics, and havent had any more problems. I give them twice per day for 7 days before and after the pups are born.

my uncle lost a litter this winter. all was fine and then at 2 days old, the mom abandoned them. was raising the litter for him at my house and when i found them after work it was too late. i think it was just first time mom jitters but its hard to say i guess.

Take a pup to the vet and have them send it off to be checked. That is the only way to find out. Shouldn't cost over $100 and will pay off in the long run. I had something like this a couple of years ago and my vet and I were beating our heads against the wall trying to figure it out. Finally we put all my hounds on amoxicillen for 10 days and never had it happen again. Some kind of bacteria being traded around in the kennel which wouldn't make the hounds look sick but would kill the pups.
