THis is your call #1, all we can do is give you our opinion and our opinion only.magic_rabbit_hunter wrote: "The sire[Buster] is a faster dog with lot’s of hunt and good desire. Once the tailgate is down he will hunt all day long if you let him. On a speed scale of 1 to 10 I would say he is a 7 or 8. He will be 2 end of Oct., so he is still learning. I’ve trialed him twice this year, Feb. and Mar. He didn’t place in feb. but got 6th in March out of 30 some dogs. I think that’s pretty good for a 1and a half yr. old. The dam {Micky} also has hard hunt. She is a really good jump dog. She can sometimes pick up a scent that the other dogs have missed. I like her for her nose, excellent pack dog, knows her place in the pack and does her part. Like I said she is still new and I’m still working with her. I think these pups will be good gun or trial dogs. I will get a picture of her next couple of days if I get some time. She is tri color, mostly white with little black and tan. When you see her picture you can tell she is Branko by her build."
To me the parents sound like they would produce some good rabbit dogs. So what do you guys think?

He thinks that is "pretty" good? Why did he breed a "pretty" good 1.5 year old male? That in itself is not a good choice of breeding, imho of course.

I don't understand this, especially when he said this: The dam {Micky} also has hard hunt. She is a really good jump dog. She can sometimes pick up a scent that the other dogs have missed. I like her for her nose, excellent pack dog, knows her place in the pack and does her part.
How old is the dam?

I'd just as soon pay the $30 in gas and take a ride out to see his kennels. You will probably see all you need to know in a hurry. A man's kennels say a lot about his integrity. They don't have to be state of the art but they ought to be neat and clean. If he has more than a couple of dozen hounds I'd be curious as to how well he knows any of them unless he also has his own running grounds.

The pedigree you posted looks fine and price wise it seems to be in line. As far as puppy mills, MO probably does not have any more or less than any other state (including Ohio). Any more most will not have AKC or UKC registered breeds (American Pet Registery seems to be a popular one these days.) and beagles are not a "hot" pet store item in many areas. I sent you a private e-mail with some names of people that live pretty close to you. Try them, most will be about an hour from you. There are many good solid Branko and Branko crosses running in the UKC and ARHA LP events in Northern Mo and Southern Iowa and virtually any should suit you at this point in time. I see that you are 15, so am wondering if you have your parents permission to go on a hound search and also wonder if your looking for a Branko has to do more with the name than whether the style of hound would actually suit you. You said you already had a beagle. Can you tell us anything about its pedigree, how it hunts etc. any info which might be of help in pointing you toward a hound that will suit your needs or might be compatible with what you now have? I know you also asked about Beagle-Basset crosses and someone suggested that they were probably "showbred" bassets. They may or may not be. There are some folks in MO that have had and do hunt Bassets. (There is a breeder over toward the Columbia area that has some pretty nice hunting bassets and he probably knows some others.) A Basset-Beagle cross in the long run will probably not have the same hunting style or outright speed that most Branko's have. Once the Branko pup matures I would not expect the 2 to be very compatible when it comes to hunting styles although both could make useful and fun hunting companions for many. So before you go collecting up a bunch of hounds I would suggest you try to see some run and decide what you like or suits the kind of terrain you normally hunt. It will be time well spent and in the long run probably better for the hounds, a group of hounds with diverse hunting styles etc. usually means that somthing will end up being neglected or at least not being used or kept. It takes time and experience to find and decide what is best for our individual needs. Try very hard to go see as many hounds run as you can as often as you can, run your own hounds as often as you can, in the end both you and the hounds will be the better for it.

Lamarr, I suspect you can spot a weasel in the woodpile without inspecting each stick! A lot of top beaglers don't have anything fancy for kennels but it's easy enough to see if the hounds are well cared for. If the dogs are mistreated in any way, it can't be covered up and no reputable breeder I know would be embarrassed to show his hounds or facilities. Besides, everytime I visit someone's kennel, I seem to learn something that will make mine better.

I would love to go see the parents of these beagles run, the only problom is I can't. My parents don't want nothing to do w/ the dogs. They said I could get one, but I just need to take care of them myself and stuff, but they won't take me anywhere to see any pups or anything. The guy lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa not in Missouri. The beagle I have now I got out of a guy in town that has two beagles that can hunt. They are not registered and all I know about my dogs pedigree is the parents. I know he runs his alot during summer nights and hunts with them in the winter. He is more than likely a 15 inch beagle that runs medium-fast and has a really good nose on him. He will run until I pull him off. He has really hard hunt. He gos through any brush pile or through any creek thats in his way of a rabbit. If he runs one into a hole he won't leave that hole until I take him off it. When he gets out of his kennel, because somtimes he does when i'm feeding him he will run across the street back into the timber behind my neighbors and run rabbits. Thats what my dog is like. I wouldn't mind having another one. I'm not to worried about speed. I want one with a good nose that won't give up.

Lefgren-Lane made a lot of good points. The ped he sent looks pretty good IMHO. Especially for the price. That is a more than fair price for a papered pup with that kind of pedigree. When it comes down to it, when buying a new, just weaned pup from any litter is a crap shoot as all bloodlines will have a dud once in a while. A lot has to do with what you do with the pup once you get it, as far as training and socializing. For a young fella like yourself you sound as if you are well on your way to becoming a good houndsman. Keep doin' your homework and asking things you don't already know and I think you'll do fine. You'll be bound to make a mistake or two as we all have but that is another way you learn things. Good luck... CHH

I have to agree with the guys here giving advice to be cautious about this breeder, especially since he's in MO. That state has the highest percentage of puppy mills & USDA licensed breeders. Its unfortunate, so we have to be careful about who we buy from especially in Missouri.
I got taken about 2 years ago from a guy in MO who claimed he had rabbit dogs. I'm not saying he DIDN'T ever hunt with them, but I've come to believe this guy was in it for the $$$. My pup from him has a good pedigree on her, heavily Branko bred, in fact. Too bad shes the shyest, most unmanageable thing you ever set eyes on. I won't breed anything like that and I lost a good deal of money/time on that gyp.
If you don't mind me asking, do you know this breeder's name? You can send me a PM or e-mail TrackInDirt13@aol.com and maybe I can let you know if this is the same guy.
