Bev wrote:LOL, this little guy refuses to die. I've named him Scrapper, but call him Crapper most of the time. He's still hanging in there, and is growing some nubbins of pin feathers on his back and wings, and some fuzz on his butt. Eyes look like they're about to open completely soon. I see little black pin-dot shininess there.
You do know Bev that whoever a baby bird sees when their eyes open is the mamma!! LOL It will be interesting to see how as a wild bird he responds to humans. I'm sure he'll be a lot of fun. Probably never able to go to the wild though. You'll need to read up about fledging (how they learn to fly) You'll have to teach him.

Leah, I've considered the possibility that Scrapper may have to become a housebird. Even if i can teach him to fly, I cannot teach him the "danger" and "survival" skills he would need in the wild - not like his natural parents would. It seems a shame to bring him this far just to let an alley cat have him. I dunno, as I told my friend Jack, I'll deal with that when the time comes - I'll do what my heart feels is right.

His feathers seem to be coming in overnight, and he doesn't appear to be bothered by my touch or voice. It will soon be time for an actual cage with some branches upon which to perch and practice. I'm eventually gonna have to up his diet from the budgie food gruel to actual bugs, seeds, and meal worms (where does one find meal worms?)

Does anyone know how to sex a bird this young? I don't know if I have a male or a female here, but I'll eventually know once he colors out.

When i have a little more time (if anyone's even interested to read this on a beagle board) I'll write up what I have observed about the parents who are still feeding Scrapper's sibs. Very interesting.

I can see it now, Bev starts a magazine about raising sparrows... Just was supposed to be a monthly newsletter or something but it turns out to be a full fledged magazine with field trial results and advertisements and all... :D

Let's see...

Sparrow Large Pack SLP
Sparrow Small Pack SSP
Sparrow Bird Brace SBB
Sparrow Solo for Certification

Bev you can get meal worms at a bait shop. Most people use them for fishing.

Thanks, Huntin54! Got a bait shop not too far away. I've always used a lot of bee moth for fishing - but never meal worms. I'll check it out.

Scrapper update for the evening:

Check how quickly this little pooper is growing the wing feathers:

This is last night at this time:

This is tonight - 24 hours later:

...and since his eyes are open and he looks directly at me when he feeds (makes that process much easier), I figured it's time to get out from under the artificial light, get next to a window where he can feel sunrise/sunset, and put a little greenery in there... something else to look at other than textureless Kleenex, lol.

Bev, you are really spoiling that guy. Strawberry plants to gaze upon!! You must have just potted them up for him.

My friend's step dad has a mocking bird. It is fed a mixture of bugs and things I don't want to think about. It has to come from a bird store or pet shop. The creatures aren't crawling but sure aren't processed either.

That might help you out. Dew worms are out in the morning, another use for a shock collar... just to make the picking easy....

Must go shave the hairless dog now!!! LOL Almost as bad as you!!!

Carolyn
