To add to the Lepto debate;

I suspect that many of the beagles dieing of kidney failure have contracted Lepto and it was the Lepto that killed the kidney.

Reaction to the Lepto vaccine constitutes more adverse reactions in dogs than all other vaccines combined, but that was for the OLD type vaccines. Are you familiar with Lyme disease? The old Lyme vaccine had reactions sometime worst then the disease. The old way was to use killed bacteria in the vaccine and that caused the reactions. Merial pioneered a new process involving recombinant DNA, were emzymes are used to break up the bacteria and only parts of the bacteria are used to produce the vaccine, thus minimizing the adverse reaction. The Merial Lyme vaccine is called Recombitek, but it is only sold to vets. So if you get a Lyme shot at the vet it's probably Recombitek, not the Fort Dodge stuff. The only recombinate Lyme vaccine I've been able to buy is ProLyme, it is NOT included in any 5 way or 7 way. You must purchase these separately. Two of my Champions had Lyme this year, so all my dogs get this shot now.

What does this have to do with Lepto, well, the new vaccines for Lepto are recombinate DNA type. The old vaccine that caused the reaction were not. Additionally, there are at least 9 serovars of Lepto in dogs and the old type of vaccine (Fort Dodge 7 way) only vacinates for 2 of them and not the 2 that are currently seen. Pfiser has developed a NEW recombinate vaccine that prevents 4 serovars of Lepto. I had a dog contract Lepto this fall and it was still yet another serovar of Lepto. My vet submitted the lab reports to Pfiser and they are in the process of including that serovar in their new vaccine.

So, in short, DO NOT USE THE 7 WAY VACCINES FOR LEPTO, IT CAN KILL YOUR DOG. DO NOT GIVE YOU DOG THE OLD STYLE (FORT DODGE) VACCINE FOR LYME, IT CAN GIVE THE DOG ALL THE SYMTOMS OF LYME. iF YOU ARE GOING TO VACCINATE FOR LYME AND LEPTO, FIND THE RECOMBINATE DNA TYPE OF VACCINE.
