where to keep pups in cold weather?

Re: where to keep pups in cold weather?
sgc, I don't know. I'd thought about putting a thermometer up against an inside wall at the dog's body height, but I'm afraid I would be tempting fate on that one. They leave those cords on the ceiling alone, but...
Whatever the thermometer read it would be from a combination of the bulb and the dog's body heat, right? I would think any source of heat to supplement what they make on their own inside the box would help tremendously. If you have a dog that doesn't chew stuff and decide to put one in, let me know. I'm curious, too.

Re: where to keep pups in cold weather?
I build my dog houses out of plywood and put 1/2" foam insulation top bottom and sides. the sides and top I put inside and cover with aluminum flashing so dogs can't tear it up and 1" under the floor. I cut a hole in the side and cover it with Kennel wire and screw a clamp light to the box with a 100 watt ceramic heat emitter that you can buy at any pet store and it keeps my dog house about 20 to 25 degrees warmer inside the box without a dog and about 35 degrees warmer with a dog. I am thinking of going to the Hound Heater, about 100 bucks a piece but would be great for welping box.

I live in northern new york on the canadian border and the weather has been down to -20 to -30. have a 5 month old pup that is by herself in the kennel and is just fine. She is in an above ground kennel with plenty of straw and blankets. All together I have 6 hounds outside and all are doing good. Make sure to give plenty of food and water throughout the day. I was wondering about the heating pad Big Mike was talking about. would like to get acouple for my old walker. She is getting up in age. Not only do worry but I have to listen to my future wife nagging constantly weather she is warm enough If you could help me out would appreciate it. thankyou

I heard of a guy using a water bed heater under a false plywood floor that he said worked great. I've also heard of guys using pig warming blankets (?) which supposedly can't be chewed.

I'd looked into pig whelping mats at one time but found them too cost-prohibitive for me. *turns pockets inside out*

Keegan and I have two adult dogs and four 5 month old pups in our kennel. Each adult has two pups in with them; nice and cozy. They have insultated houses with straw. The houses are inside our barn on a small deck with access to there outside kennel. They are doing great. Always ready to run. Their food is mixed with warm water every day, so we actually see that they are getting plenty of water. KC

Our pups have been all dusty since the cold set in. I think they've got a hole dug in the rootwad pile and prefer it to the doghouse...
The youngest and oldest hounds seem to be the ones with the most issues with the cold.

I built a large dog house that is well insulated and make sure no one comeing in and put them all together. For water I drilled a hole thru a mason jar lid and put a wire thru the lid . Placed a 60 watt light blub in the jar screwed the lid on tight. Ran the wire thru a steel conduit. I siliconed around the hole in the lid the wire went thru . I have did this for years and my dogs always have water. I used hose clamps to hold the conduit against the fence so the dogs can,t pull the cord out of the bucket.

Bev, I live ina small town called waddington. IT is between Massena and Ogdensburg. Temperatures have been horrible. It went from +30 degrees one day to -27 degrees the next. IT just Started to warm up today. High got to 15 degrees it felt like a heat wave. Ifeel real bad for the people in the midwest. I think they are getting it much worse.

JRupert, you live in one of my favorite places in the country. If I ever leave this state, I will look for someplace around A-Bay. I just don't know how much industry there is - I gotta work, lol.
