I will NEVER forget my boot camp days in the good ole US Army. Into the sealed hut, fire off the tear gas, everyone in the group of about 10 to 15 guys had to yell "gas" before anyone can put their mask on. After everyone had them on, fitted and cleared, the drill instructor says remove the masks and after you say your name, rank and serial number you can leave the enclosed hut. I happened to be super sensitive to the stuff and had one hell of a time getting it all out. Man, were those others pissed at me not being able to get it out very quickly. No one ever thought that to be cruel for humans let alone for a dog. I'll tell you the snot was runnong out of my nose and my eyes were burning fire for quite some time after. Don't let a little red pepper get your panties in a wad as it ain't even close to what I remember of the tear gas treatment!

boy am I going to open a can of worms but have you ever noticed the guys that have trouble with dogs running deer seem to have the same problem dog after dog? We have noticed that the normal guy sounds the same when he calls his dogs to a jumped rabbit as he does when he sees a deer jump up in front of his dog. I was taught not to say a word just let the dogs figure it out on there own and then correct the ones that mess up.

I am with those that believe the pepper thing to be cruel, Something that a vast majority of Beagle owners would never consider doing. Tritronics get my vote.
I read someplace that a dog's sense of smell is 7 times better that a humans. After the "pepper torture" that pup can not smell his own tail.
Take note next time you hear someone say his hounds are "Deer Proof" and the majority of his dogs will sport e-collars when the tail gate drops.

I would have to agree thats the point i was getting at its all cruel just depends on what tecnique you choose to use I choose Electric collar and run shocking charge thru thier body its all cruel I really perfer the natural The only way i have seen thats not cruel that works is raise them with your dogs

Friend had 3 beagles that ran loose for 2 yrs. could run the hair off of a deer.2 times in a setup situation and the dogs would back out of neigbors yard when they saw the concrete deer.was funny to watch I`ve also seen dogs that I dont think anything short of a bullet would break them from running deer.

So if a dog has a shock collar on he/she will run deer ?

Ever seen a rabbit cross a road and the dogs do the same ? All my dogs wear s/collars every time out , I have lost 1 due to a car and a rabbit crossing the road, I can stop them with a collar

That's a shame about your gyp rabbitsmoker. I'd never even heard of that before you mentioned it here. I guess I will just have to say there is a lot less of a chance of any long lasting physical effects from the ecollar than from the pepper method then.

Runninhard, I would like to think that most people would agree there's a difference between "choosing" to use ecollars and "having" to use them. For safety and security I like to have them on..........even on a broke dog just like you. If after being shocked off of deer I still "have" to keep them on just in case..........well then my dogs aren't really broke are they.

Many folks believe that running rabbits to their death is cruel as well. I guess cruel is like pretty, in the eye of the beholder! I sure did think it cruel to find numerous hounds splattered in the middle of the road. I have since those olden days purchased a shock collar BUT if I had one that was good and hard to break I'd do whatever was neccessary to save it's life because if not broke from running deer it was going somewhere else and maybe heaven anyway.
