I think it comes from a great deal of independence and focus, those rare great ones seem to have total dedication and concentration to finding a rabbit and a knack for doing it.
My old Pop Fanny bitch being one of the best I ever hope to own, once off the tailgate, she disappeared till you heard that sweet squall/cry mouth declaring "she's rousted from her seat" !!! "come get you some !!!"
I've had others that would work up a start from a cold track, but nothing is more chilling to the nerves than a silence being broken by the intense cry of a find that says "I almost had fur in my mouth on that one boss !!! I'll bring her back your way"... ;)
One of the greatest complements ever paid my little Fanny was from a young man just starting hunting. We had made our rounds and were trying to get to the truck in a raining downpour when Fanny jumped another one along the ditch bank on the road to the truck. He said, "that little dog just don't know when to quit, does she?
One of the best things with her was going to fields where others were leaving saying, "no rabbits in there", and having a good days sport hunting where none were supposed to be... ;)
