Mt. Zion Pete

Post by KanesIrish »

Does anybody realize how much of an impact Mt. Zion Pete has made on our dogs?

A lot of people talk about FC Wilcliffe Boogie and FC Gray's Linesman and dogs like that when they talk about the beginning of the field trial hounds. But nobody really looks at Mt. Zion Pete.

IFC Mt. Zion Pete is behind every "hare hound". I believe his blood could probably be found in every state and province in North America.

What does everybody else think?

I'd love to hear some personal accounts from folks who got to watch him run, what kind of hound he was, etc. Anybody like that still around? I see him pretty far back in some of my hounds' pedigrees, but it would still be interesting to see what he contributed to the gene pool.

Mt. Zion Pete belonged to a member of our club here in Ironwood and I have talked to a few old timers who had the pleasure to run with him. Joe Corullo, Howard Wilson and Dominic Leitza. They all have good things to say about him. Paul Hetcko was the original owner of him then sold him to to a guy in Ishpeming Michigan.. I guess no one bred to him until he arrived in Ishpeming. What I have gotten from some of the old timers was he was a good dog and a better producer. The dogs he came out of were not much though. Alot of the Info you get about older hounds and when you can't see them personally its hard to judge them by here say..alot of jelious people out there. I live on a hill over looking Mt. Zion, every time I look at the hill it makes me think about this dog.. I agree that almost ever beagling program today has a little pete in them.

The problem with Pete was the same with nearly all Large Pack hounds of that time. He was advertized in Hounds & Hunting in the midst of a book full of brace hounds. He did not get the exposure that many of the hare bred hounds once the gundog (SPO) trials started in the early 80's. There was a huge market for say Billy Grimshaw, Mountaineer King, Dingus MacRae, the Weir Creek & DFJ hounds, The Brad-Ju's, and a host of others. For this exposure we need only to THANK BOB & PEARL BAKER AND LARGE PACK MAGAZINE! (Today's Better Beagling) These folks should be nominated and put in the Beagling Hall of Fame on the next ballot! Newcomers today have no idea how much that magazine, with it's card stock covers that was face stapled of about 40 pages per issue, helped to promote SPO & Large Pack back then!
