Check Out My New Welping Area....

Post by CAINCUTTER »

I am about done with this project… I never like any such endeavor that last more than a few days… I have spent too much time and all my allowance building this puppy palace. I built this 12 X 12 barn about 5 years ago for my granddaughter, Lacey’s little Caspian Horse (Quest). Quest has now moved on to a nice pasture with a real barn, located at Lacey’s house. I have been planning on making this little barn into BIG DOG HOUSE.

This facility has a big whelping box with a 4 X 8 pen attached…

The box is insulated top, bottom and all sides. It has a pig rail and heat light inside. One 60 watt bulb is sure to keep this insulated box warm when and if pups are born during cool weather.

We have lots of lights and two fans. One fan for the dogs and one for me it I have to spend the night in the loft.

I introduced the new digs to all my hounds and they seemed to approve. It would be a little cozy, but this could serve as a doggy hurricane shelter. It has got to be better than ridding out the storm stuffed in my dog box for 18 or more hours like they did for Katrina…

Cain, that is VERY nice. It's going to make raising a litter much more fun!

Looks nice.

Whats the inside lined with? And what did you use for insulation?

I'm just building my second run, and I insulated with 2" foam, gonna line it with luan(sp?) 1/4 ply wood. The first one I lined with cedar, but that adds a lot to the cost.

This box is in a water tight barn, so I used 13R regular house wall insulation (4 inches in the walls and 2 inches in the top. I insulated the floor with 1 Inch foam) The walls are 3/8 plywood and the floor is covered with convyor rubber.

You better be careful or some of the guys are gonna jump on you for being soft on your hounds, lol. Please don't take this the wrong way but for the average rabbit hunter you're thoughtful whelping setup (with a loft for you to sleep in!!) is absolutely EVOLUTIONARY! LOL!!!

You're a good man Charlie Brown.
