Well, I see another poster can bash and is also afraid to post a name.

I have a dog that is Gay breeding, linebred I might add from the old stock way back. Gay Baker as an example and he has plenty of drive.

pros and cons

Post by Big Dog »

I will comment on the Branko stuff as it is the one that I am more familiar with. I will start by saying that the Old blood seems to have produced much better than the new blood. I have found them to have bottomless energy, they can go all day and are just running and hunting fools, if you have the right stuff in the pedigree. Their speed and control has a very wide range I have seen some that were upper medium speed and some that were flat out windsplitters. Just like every other line they have both good and not so good dogs. With that being said, I will address the negatives. I tend to like BRanko crosses much better than straight Branko breeding. From what I have seen over the past couple of years of owning some from this line and observing others at trials is that you get a much better dog if you cross it with something that has a little more control, and dependent upon what dogs are in the pedigree you may need to cross it with something with a lot of hunt and good conformation. Some that come out of some of the newer blood seem to be slow to start and late bloomers, If you have patience to wait a couple of years then you are okay, if you are impatient you may cull them before they come into their own. Overall I would say it is a good line if kept straight and great when crossed with the right stuff.

I like the branko line the best my self, but it might be because it is all I have In my kennels.I also agree that it is better to out cross to something that has better hunt,I like the Branko/Spur cross it seems like that cross puts more hunt in them.If I buy a pure Branko dog I want as much of the old blood that I can get,but like I said most of the pure Branko's that I've hunted with don't have super hard hunt to them.Just my opinion so please don't bite my head off.

i dont know if i want to respond to this question i have both boldstroke and branko bloodlines line bred will start start with boldstrokes pluses if you like a dog that will kill itself to get to the rabbitt thats what youll get and thats what i want they tend to start early there ground pounders and only know one thing and care about one thing and thats getting that rabbitt no matter what they have to go threw to get it minus the only one i dave seen is certain ones then to be a little hard headedbut i can deal with that branko my experiences were with alot of jack of all trades and they tended to be very slow starters and after so long my patience run out i had a high cull rate with them im keeping what i have have and changing over to boldstrokes this is only my opinion thank you

Branko lines, like any other lines have their good points and their bad points. I've seen a lot of Branko's top studs, I've judged them and ran against them. I've liked a couple and didn't like a couple. Branko dogs are characterized as being hard running hounds that go over the end and are check stealers...like any line, yes I have seen that. I have also seen IFC Branko's Warlock and CKC Nat. FC & IFC Branko's Dirty Pond Laika(winner of the International Trial of Champions). These are probably the best two Branko dogs that I have seen. Both are quick line running hounds, that STICK on the check and have the nose to get it up and going. These two hounds are from a long line of linebred hounds.

The only Gay bred hounds I've seen are that that come out of FC Nomad's Buckshot Mr. Bill. You only see Gay breeding WAY WAY back in these dogs. Most of the Bill dogs I've seen are just plain, old fashioned, good dogs. Nothing flashy, they're just there and they do the job right. You can usually tell whats a Bill dog from their coloring, their head, and how they are when they are on the rabbit.

I know nothing of the Boldstroke hounds, other that I have seen some pedigrees and I think he based his lines on IFC Able's East Coast Trimmer, which is basically what Mr. Krpan did as well.

I hope this helps.

In response to Guests comment on Branko dogs watching & waiting for the other dogs. I'm curious what others say about that. I have & like Branko bred dogs, but I have stayed away from Ali Baba bred dogs because I have seen this trait in some of the very few I have seen. (I have only seen a few Ali Baba dogs, & the ones I have seen may not be typical.) (I have also seen this in Schnapps bred dogs.) Run great but won't search.

The pro`s for owning Boldstrokes are you will have some of the best hunting dogs around. They can do it when most can`t. They are full of hunt and desire. They are med fast - fast and can hammer a rabbit for hours and hours. This line has produced many field champions in all registries, mostly ARHA though.
Con`s to this line......... you need to carry a box of band aids while you hunt, (you will need them ) they can be a little hard headed because they won`t quit when you do they just keep going and going. You will have to go get them.

I know this from first hand experience , I own 16 pure line bred Boldstrokes.

As for Branko I have 1 Branko bred female and she is a good hunter with great line control and speed. The only fault I see in her is sometimes she is a little lazy , she will wait for the Boldstrokes to do the work and then jump in. But not all the time .

As far as the Gay hounds, if you had some of the real Gay line then you would have something. But most of the Gay line is watered down. The Gay line has produced some great dogs though. They seem to be a little slower than the Boldstrokes and Branko line.

All of these lines have good traits , my suggestion would be to go and watch each line run, find out what you like and decide for yourself.

What I like, you might not and vise - vesra.

Thanks Paul

in my very limited branko experience, i have had or ran with on a regular basis 5 dogs, all go back very close linebred to ali-baba. they all had plenty of search but they would smoke a deer (or coyote) if they could. again, limited experience here, but that made up my mind quickly.

I have a pen full of Branko bred hounds. I find that some of the young dogs are a too full of power as teenagers. Run them half to death and watch them become visting hounds in short time. The Brankos I have that have Branko as the breeder on the papers are far better than the ones that list me as the breeder. The one I liked the best was a Jack dog. The most correct beagle I have seen was an Ali-BaBa female. Another thing is the Brankos last a very long time and the Vet bills are few.

I would have to disagree Jack. I have bought 2 right from Branko that he said were top notch dogs that were pure junk. They were deer runners, and both were dog runners. I've seen several from him that were dog runners. I have had real nice dogs that were Branko / Indian Hills Major cross.
