Snow

Post by mikes »

I took the dogs out today. We have about 5" to 6" of snow on the ground the dogs started a rabbit but it was weird they would bark then stop then start again not a solid bark like they usually do when they are on a rabbit. Does snow really have an effect on them or could they have been chasing something else I don't know. when I started it was under 20 degrees but was warming up.

Yes snow does make a difference different conditions hold more or less scent and some dogs seem to perform better in different conditions for example wet snow that has started melting can be awesome running where crusty snow with powder under it can be really hard for a dog to keep the track going. This doesn't always hold true but for me it is usually the case.

Not saying they couldn't of been running something bad that happens also I have seen a pup hit a pheasent for the first time and pop off a few times and trail it.

Had the same problem they would pop off then go alittle and nothing but I never seen as many rabbits as I do when I am out there ,most of the time 2 rabbits jump at the same time ,but when I pulled up in the truck turn them loose ,the biggest red tail hawk flew out off a big tree over looking the hole place and I seen some coyote track dam hawk probly eating there every day if its a female with chicks ,to dam many of them ,not that I would do any thing to harm them but we need rabbits to, all the way down State road 63 every 5 miles red tail hawk on a fence or pole I have seen them come strait down and nail a rabbit if there going to be around then the State and DNR needs to turn some rabbits loose breed and release
