in some ways a loss......
yes Brad you are probably right that we will see a new IDNR Director. i have mixed feelings about it though, and in the end my gut feeling is yes Mr. Goss needs to go. Heres what i came up with.....
John Goss is the first IDNR Director ive known that is actually concerned about the issues of fish and wildlife propagation. He is also the only one that has really listened when we had issues or complaints we wanted to air. The problem i saw was in the fact that it was like this with Mr.Goss...."I am their leader, which way did they go". My first impression of john came from the july 1,2003 meeting in his office when he told Fish and Wildlife they had to leave some of the areas open year round. and then again after the following FWCC meeting in the parking garage in the basement of the Government Center South. I had told john that i felt the sportsmen of the state wouldnt mind having to pay a few dollars for a fishing license after they turned 65 in the light of the millions of dollars in PR/DJ monies it would bring to the state for Fish and Wildlife.... however it was going to be a rough sell to the sporting dog folks who were about to lose their training areas on state lands..... and ask him if there was a chance he could reign in on Fish and Wildlife and keep the areas open. John Goss's words to me were " Ive been thinking about that jack, and im going to go back and tell fish and wildlife to pick out a few small areas that they dont want dogs on...... then watch them for four or five years... if theres no improvement we will open em back up. if, on the other hand they have shown big rabbit population improvements we could look at it again. I told him i was sure the sporting dog guys would agree to that... Then weeks went by and i heard nothing from him.... so i caled and ask him what was going on...."well, they already had their proposal written up and want to advance it on". It became obvious that Glen Lange was in charge not John Goss.
Lets not lose track of some very important points here.
one) IDNR is made up of 22 seperate divisions., and not all of them deal with the sportsmen.
two) the basic divisions that we need to concern ourselves with are. Fish and Wildlife, Parks and Reservoirs, and Law Enforcement.
Three) As Govenor of the State, Mitch is going to be a very busy man. more than likely our changes are going to come from his cabinet.
four) Mitch has already said he will seek sportsmans advice on who the next IDNR director will be.
Five) and this one is extremely important... Glen Lange needs to be one of the first causalties....
six) Fish and Wildlife and Parks and Reservoirs needs to combined into one division and Pagic and any other dead wood elimanated. We are spending way to many dollars on none game agendas....Its time that IDNR went on a diet....lol
