Mud- glad I am not your dog, lol. I have always been to the mindset that you use the collar to change the behavior- once dog quits, then electric quits. Dog takes to the track of a deer. Owner shocks dog till dog quits chasing deer. That should be all that is needed. Once they quit the electric is no longer necessary to nail them all the way back. That would be kinda like calling a dog to you and then whippin it when it gets to you?? I would think that would be kind of confusing to the hound. I want them to associate the pain with RUNNING the deer, not the deer itself. They quit running the deer -they quit getting electric. Furthermore, I doubt mashing it till the hound is back at your feet is the approach recommended by TriT.
Anyway we have different styles. I am not saying that some(read very few) hounds dont need #6 mashed till it times out cause I am sure some do need that. What I am saying is that each hound has a different disposition and that most in my experience can be broke without extreme electric. One key is to repeat daily till they stop. You can't hit them one weekend and expect them to remember that one outing 2 weeks later. Hit them today, tomorrow, and the next if necessary and they will be trained not to take to the deer. Good luck

JUST TO CLEAR THIS UP I DIDNT SAY TAKE A DOG THAT HAS NEVER HAD A COLLAR ON AND TAKE IT TO THE WOODS TO FIND A DEER AND THEM SMOKE EM TILL THEY ARE BACK AT YOUR FEET. IF YOU INTRODUCED YOUR DOG TO THE COLLAR CORRECTLY IT DONT TAKE BUT A FEW SEC FOR THEM TO BE AT YOUR FEET. IF THEY ARE CLOSE AND HEADIN MY WAY AND CAN SEE ME I WILL LET UP. THIS IS COMMON SENSE FELLAS. IF YOU LIKE CONSISTANCY AND WANT TO JUST BUMP THEM AND SAY "COME HERE MY PRECIOUS TINKER BELL" YOU GO RIGHT AHEAD AND HAVE YOUR NUMEROUS DEER RACES I WILL BE OUT BUNNY BOUNCIN WHILE YOU CHASE YOUR DEER DOGS. DONT GET ME WRONG I HAVE HAD DOGS THAT TOOK A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT AFTER YOU CHASE DOGS FOR A HALF OF DAY YOU WOULD RATHER BURN THEM UP AND TRY TO TEACH THEM IN ONE LESSON. I WANT MY DOGS TO THINK THAT DEER IS EATING THEM UP THEY WILL FIGURE OUT IF THEY DONT BARK ON DEER AND ONLY ON RABBIT THEY WONT GET ATE UP. JUST MY TWO SENSE YOU KEEP THE CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!! :check:

I agree with you Mafia 100%, I do beleive in what you are saying the only reason this pup has not got that yet is I didn't have her collar broke, but now I see she doesn't really mind the collar she is going to get ate up, as many times as it takes, I wish I knew someone that would pressure break her for me but I don't so I will just try to do it myself. Well tried to set the pup up tonight took her and my old female and turned them right on hot deer track. She hasn't been loose since Thurs.. So i figured she would want to run. Well I walked her down the line for maybe a 1/4 of a mile not even a happy tail. I saw the deer 2 times so I know it was super hot. Well I walked them by a briar patch and they ran a rabbit a little but not well so maybe scent conditions were poor. So I guess I will just run her with a good broke dog and lite her up if she goes and the old dog doesn't. I can't believe she didn't go.
