ear hematoma
Anyone know a fix for this other than a $250 vet surgery bill?? I drained it once and it came back within a day.
Re: ear hematoma
I've heal many of them. Make a small cut on the inside of the ear and drain it well. Then take a syringe full of peroxized and flush the ear out a couplr times a day. You can start you dog on antibiotics at the same time. This has worked for me many times. Best of luck!

I drained it once with syringe and needle and it filled back up. How do you get them to stop bleeding?
Re: ear hematoma
I never had one bleed much. Most don't bleed at all. A little blood stop might be nessasary. Again, make sure you flush it well with Hydrogen Perxocide. If you don't get the infection out then it will never heal.gundog wrote:I drained it once with syringe and needle and it filled back up. How do you get them to stop bleeding?
I have used the needle to draw out the fluid before but it clots back up and will not drain any longer. That's why I make a small incision so it will continue to drain.
Hope this helps.

Jim hit the nail on the head. Same way I do it. Only diference I flush with Iodine. Use a general antibiotic for 5 days. I make the cut up and down not side to side.

Re: ear hematoma
how big are the hematoma's you have been dealing with? the one my dog has is the size of a toddlers fist. I drained 36 cc of blood off the other day and could have gotten a little more off but he shook his head and needle came out and I didn't want to stick him again.
Re: ear hematoma
Does your dog have ear mites that caused him to shake his head? That is reason for the hematoma, according to my Vet. He advised me to tape or immobilize his ear so when he shakes his head, the ear doesn't sling around causeing more blood to collect in the ear.
Re: ear hematoma
you want to do as they said before ---the ear will be about half the size of the other ear if you don't take care of it ---some times when you have pups together one has bit the ear

Re: ear hematoma
My dogs almost never fight but the other nite they got into it and the next morning he had the hematoma. So I guess he got bit on the ear.
All niter what do you mean his ear will be half the size- are you saying if it is infected he will lose part of it.
