Re: Selling dogs ?/ VENTING!!
I am pretty much settled down on it. LOL. I just never cease to be amazed by people that claim to be hound hunters that then show they don't know a whole lot, when they appear on the surface to know some. LOL!!! Thanks for the input from all, no more trials off my grounds. Try ALL you want here and leave with a dog or not.

mybeagles,
A dog shouldn't need time to get used to a new hunting area true, but he does need time to get used to a new owner, a new kennel, a new food before he can function proper in the field. To a dog who's lived with 1 owner all his/ her life its not only a shock to their minds, but to their body as well.
When you 1st arrived in Afganastan you probably had anxiety pangs. You probably didnt crap or eat normally until you got settled in either.
Sometimes its wiser to keep your opinion to yourself. Dont judge any dog a cull if you've never even seen it run.

Katy is turning into a super nice rabbit dog. Just our style of dog. Excellent hunt, great jump dog, fast and with line control. Won't be long we'll be trialing her. I will say this about Katy, she does love her cats, she has never started one on her own but a couple of times a buddies dog has and she shows them how to do it right!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!
All kidding aside, she will never leave here if that tells you anything. Thanks again for selling Katy to us.
PS. Anyone who has watched her run will tell you they were impressed.

Re: Selling dogs ?/ VENTING!!
It's not just selling broke dogs- it can get bad selling pups. I sold 2 pups to a guy who claimed to be a big time rabbit hunter. The pups were 9 weeks old when he got them. He calls me 6 months later and says the pups are no good. He never took them out of the wire-bottom kennel until they were 8 months old then took them out with some dogs they had never been around and when they didn't instantly go in the woods and run, he said they were no good! I think some people think dogs are machines- they work when you open the kennel door, any time, any place. They're animals, just like we are, and if a strange person takes them to a strange place, they are going to worry about getting back home. They'll go in the woods and run for their long-time owner because they have learned that he will be there to take them home when the day is over. They don't know that about a stranger.

Never said Jim's dog was a cull. Never said the guy buying the dog had a clue. Never seen the dog, never met the potential buyer.A dog shouldn't need time to get used to a new hunting area true, but he does need time to get used to a new owner, a new kennel, a new food before he can function proper in the field. To a dog who's lived with 1 owner all his/ her life its not only a shock to their minds, but to their body as well.

What I am saying is, In my experience (Not opinion) dogs that figit around "getting used to things" are not your better dogs. A good beagle is anxious to get out of the dog box and hits the brush on the fly. If a broke dog followed me around the first day I wouldn't be interested. I dont buy broke dogs so not much to worry about there.
Now I would expect a new dog not to handle, but not hunting until it was comfortable with new owner sounds like an excuse for lack of hunt. When your in the market for a dog its easy to overlook faults because you want them to be good. I just dont sugar coat it and not everyone likes that. Most beagles suck, there are quite a few average dogs and mighty few good ones. "MOST DOGS FOR SALE SHOULD BE CULLED"
I do and will continue to judge every dog I own based on the expectations I have for a beagle. If a friend asks me to run or condition a dog for them they will get my impression of the dog. They can choose to do with it what they want. If the dog followed me around they would have to come get it. If I run dogs with someone else I welcome their opinion on my dogs good and bad.
P.S. Never had any problems taking a crap. I do miss my family, my dogs, and my friends. If I followed my boss around for two weeks not doing anything I wouldn't still be in the military......

Re: Selling dogs ?/ VENTING!!
Never saw the military cull hard in my time in the US Army. Once you signed your name on the dotted line you belonged to Uncle Sam. You either did your job or the military made you face consequences and I can assure you being sent back home wasn't one at the top of the list. If you ever got to that point there were consequences to face with that even if you have spent your entire tour in the brig and it was called a Dishonorable Discharge that wrecked your entire life. Most generally military personnel were given every opportunity to meet expectations and culling was a last resort. Culling is a consequence of which the product has been totally given up on or rejected and in doing that it is my opinion that every chance should be given and the goals should also be realistic. Not everyone and everything have the same learning curves and that is what makes us and dogs individuals. I'm not saying there are NO culls in society or in dogs but NOT the majority are culls. I think being a cull is in the eye of the beholder and one man's cull is another man's best dependant on what each uses as the measurement of ability.

Re: Selling dogs ?/ VENTING!!
Army is cutting 50,000 or 10%. In a Brigade with a couple thousand, cutting 100 or so is about average. We have 100+ at home that found a reason not to deploy so the army is finding a reason to send them home. Although there are likely more disfunctional 18-24 y/o than you have seen in your time, the trimming of the ranks will make us stronger. However, they do allow sodomites now......Never saw the military cull hard in my time in the US Army.

400 Billion is being cut from defense budget which could double if Congress cant trim the other government spending. Fighting two concurrent wars has placed bigger demands on the military. Ive been overseas 6 of 8 years. Fortunately some of that time was in Korea which is now considered a stablization tour. Many of my peers are on their 5th and 6th deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan.
In times past there was more time spend state side where leaders could focus on discipline and corrective training. When your deployed most of the time, disfunctional, irresponsible, or disruptive behavior frequently results in people being killed or injured. One major screw up now is career ending.

Re: Selling dogs ?/ VENTING!!
My beagles: as usual I agree with your opinions. If I pay good money for a dog, I expect it to hit the ground looking for a rabbit and run with anyone and anything. Everything else is just an excuse. Now, If I buy a $100 dog, I don't expect much and it will bet more time to develop. If I sell a dog, it is the same way. The buyer can take it anywhere immediately and watch it go. If it doesn't suit him, just bring it back. That is what a trial is.
Re: Selling dogs ?/ VENTING!!
I can't understand why someone would be upset with someone bringing a dog back that they let out on trail, thats what a trail is for. What you think is worth the money or a pretty good dog may not suit me in any way. I don't think price is the issue, seen and bought some dogs that really suit me cheap also bought and seen some costly dogs that needed culled to me.Putting a dog out on trail is up to the seller, but saying that the man who brought it back is dumb or doesn't know what a dog is not right. Most of the time I buy in the field or off the chain, but if I did have one on trail and it didn't suit me I would expect the dog to be taken back with out reason as long as the terms of the trail were met. jmo
