12-17-11 Hunt

Post by rdfirenut »

Hi All,

This past spring my son and I donated 2 small game hunts to his school to be auctioned off at the annual
fundraiser. The first hunt was for rabbits with our 3 beagles and the other is for squirrels with our 2 curs.
When I donated these I was thinking about a father/son team. The young man that won the auction called me
to start working on the details (license and hunter ed) and told me he was planning on bringing his soon to be
new wife. How cool.
Yesterday was the rabbit hunt. Did we have a blast. It was a day that I don't think any of the 4 of us will ever forget.
We started off with a scenic drive thru the mountains. Once we arrived to the parking area, we packed lunches and collared
up the dogs. We talked about how the hunt goes (no jump shooting). After unleashing, it took about 20 minutes to get the 1st
one going. The bunnies were holding tight. During the about 3 1/2hr chase we only saw 1 stray. Courtney and Andrew missed
the first shot, together. Then we split up to increase the odds in our favor. Courtney didn't miss the next shot. It was her
1st animal she had taken. After the celebrating, it took about 30 minutes to find another. We let this one do a short circle,
then Andrew took this one.
The fellowship with this young couple was awesome. What a blessed day we had.
Andrew and I talked about some places of his that we might be able to hit next time.
We are all looking forward to the squirrel hunt.
Thank you for letting us share with ya'll.

Hey RD. Great job, I'm sure those young folks will always remember that day. By the way, nice dog box. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

TallPaul- yes it was a Rossi, a 3 barrel combo.
i think Andrew said he paid $200 for it. It came with 22lr, 20ga, and 243.
great starting set-up for Courtney. It came as a youth model so he added
a slip-on pad to get the right LOP. worked great.
