Re: hound won't bark
just an update here, took my little hound out yesterday and she FINALLY jumped and ran her first rabbit and barked on trail right before it squirted out of the brush! she circled it and ran it to the hole, i was so happy she then got on two more but the chases were short lived but it has been so hot and dry here that can be expected especially when i see some of the other guys having the same problem by their posts on here. i honestly was about to give up on her but she MAY end up working out. i can't be too hard on her cause she is learning just like i am. i just wish she had a computer in the kennel and could read this forum so she could learn like i am

WVden: You said, "I've got a female that is about 19months old" and you asked if she was "too far gone to fool with anymore".
It sounds like she is a naturally, very fast dog that runs to catch. I would vote that she is, indeed too far gone for her age. If she can stick to a rabbit but is not giving enough mouth for you (which seems to be where you are coming from), then I don't think she ever will. This doesn't mean she will not be a nice dog. Just that she will probably never use enough tongue to please you.

well, she doesn't bark until the rabbit is "up" i have never had a hound like that i will see if i like it or not. i do know when she opens up though you better knock the safety off. i guess just like there are all kinds of hunters ther is all kinds of hounds huh? just happy to see she is finally "getting it" may run her this evening if the weather holds off, finally getting a little rain. will be upddating with more news. if i have learned anything with her its patience

Re: hound won't bark
took her out this evening in between storms and she jumped two rabbits in about 1 hour! took her about an hour to get going but once she got her nose filled with that first hot scent it was on! she was one little huntin machine!
i had to kinda pull her off the second one cause it started thundering and lightening. hope this don't hurt her any but when i caught her i gave her lots of praise then made a mad dash for the truck. this little hound may work out after all

Re: hound won't bark
"After many field training trips and what will seems like an eternity of kicking out or flushing rabbits for pup to trail, pup will suddenly react to a line with a bark. The tone of the bark will be distinctly different from the one pup uses when his territory is being threatened. Usually it will begin as a whine or whimper...when pup has successfully "opened" on his first rabbit you will experience the excitement and satisfaction of knowing you played a major role in his developement. When he completey circles his first rabbit you will feel the pride and amazement that can only result from all the hard work and training that you and pup have endured" Bill Bennetts Beagle Basics (training of the hunting beagle).
Congratulations! It seems your persisitance and patience is being rewarded. A tight mouthed dog with a lot of hunt is just what most guys want.

wow! that quote just nailed it! thanks

Re: hound won't bark
I'ed still run her with a nice smooth honest hound she can run with easily. She may not know how much she is supose to bark on a line,if she has never run with other dogs.Good broke hounds can teach young dogs more in a short time than they can learn on their owne in the same time.Soloing is important but hounds are pack animals by nature, they thrive in that enviroment.Just make sure that they are something you want her learning from.
