It was discovered AKC official measurement cards are not worth the paper their printed on.....judged some 14" males the other day with 13" cards. Wonder why the system failed us so bad...or could it be that there are some dishonest people in this world. I wonder if more rules would fix it??????
I know Matt, but I still might have you measured just to expose the rule

i think the 15 inch rule is dumb and needs to be changed or removed. that said, the dog should have never made it to a grand if he or she is too big. that is the rules you agree to play by if you run these trials, world or not. too many big dogs make champion or grand and are way too big. why not just change the dumb rule that nobody adheres to unless they are doing it for thier own gain. if the dog is to big its too big, i see it all the time, i have no dogs over 15 and dont care if they are. if they are good dogs they will stay at my house. if they get measured out then, oh well. no need to fuss about it.

I don't have a big one, wish I did! But I would hate to get all the way to 3rd base only for her to tell me it's to big

Really baffled by this one, Dog had to measure in to enter...correct ? No ? Any handler has a right to challenge a hounds size, so should be the same breed inspector, with the same measuring stand......so what changed?

Re: How bad u wanna WIN
I will preface this comment with the statement that I have zero dog in this fight (pardon the pun). I do not personally know either of the parties involved in this debacle. Saying that, I am taking a 100% impartial approach to the reasoning.
I agree with the move to measure the hound to determine if it was over 15". I say this for multiple reasons. The UKC's (and AKC's) breed standards are implemented for a reason. They have a historical background behind them that has been tried and true. Secondly, the "standards" are so called because they set the standard by which ALL beagles will be evaluated by. If this was not the case, then where is the line drawn? when the hound becomes 16"? 17"? 18"? If you want to enjoy the privileges and rules of the UKC trial events, then you should be required to abide by their rules. If you want to run larger than 15" hounds when rabbit hunting with buddies, by all means go ahead. However, when the national standard is involved the line must be drawn somewhere. I think the line here, 15", is a reasonable one and one that can be followed through appropriate breeding.
For me, the issue in this situation and the one that is causing the most attention and anger is this: TIMING. The dog should not have been able to progress as far as it did. It should have never been allowed to become a Grand and proceed to the world hunt. If the staking request happened at the local club, no one would be hearing so much about this. The hound would have been one hell of a rabbit hound in private hunting, but not subject to disqualification for being non-conforming at the world hunt. I think the burden falls to the local clubs that allowed this hound to proceed. Honesty and integrity in the UKC rules should be of utmost importance for the clubs hosting local hunts and those certifying these hounds for champion and grand.
And for those who would say that I am a big hound hater; I run big hounds almost exclusively. My ideal dog is a 14-14.5" hound; however, I do have one little bitch that is really close to being over 13"
Per the United Kennel Club Beagle Breed Standards; revised 1/01/2013.
ELIMINATING FAULTS:
Over 15 inches in height.
