Why would you want a dog with no hunt?
Deer host stated it is genetic. I agree to a certain pt. If a hound had no hunt hiw could he hold a track, lose it, then find it again to make forward progress if he didn't hunt.
Hunt varies in each dog, as does the term varies with diff people.
Like DH said its genetic, but also it depends on how much the owner is invovled keeping young ones in rabbits too.

( Beagles are known as hunting dogs ) LOL! just funning

Some dogs have poor hunt it's a fact of life. They will run a rabbit
Once a rabbit is up. Either by being jumped by another dog or just dumb luck if the hound stumbles on to one.
But some lack in hunt. No one likes a dog with out hunt and that's why they usually don't stick around at least
Here. Hunt is in the dogs blood either it has it or not.

Well started=opens on track and can circle most rabbits started. I didn't mention hunt because some dogs will never have hunt and it is not something you can train a beagle to do. Its genetic, either they have it or they don't. A finished dog= has been given plenty of running time and has at least 2 hunting seasons of hard hunting
Exactly how I would have described. I just got a pup that I would have described as green started and has now progressed to started. Well started is once it has jumped and circled a rabbit more than once. ;) However I have seen dogs well under 2 years old that I would have called finished. It all depends on the time spent and what they are showing.

mdbeagler what do you consider a hound that jumps and opens on 15 rabbits but can't put together 100 yard run without losing it?
I would say a dead dog...LOL.
If a puppy opens on 15 rabbits and attempts to track it a distance I would say it's started or what some would say green started.
i have seen dogs that were supposed to be champions that couldn't run a rabbit by themselves, but they were still started.'
I have also seen dogs that could jump a rabbit but could not run a rabbit, and a lot of no hunt dogs that could care less about finding a rabbit but once it's up they run the hell out of it. Does that mean they aren't started, I don't think so. I just think it means they aren't a complete hound and many never will be!

Lightly Started = Barks scent a few feet and gets excited.
Started = Barks scent for several yards and tries to make a circle.

Running = jumps own rabbit, runs rabbit for as long as it will run!

For Sale = very little hunt, can't circle a rabbit by itself, barks forward and back, excellent breeding!

Best way to have dogs with no hunt is to run them with a real jump dog, not one that hunts hard, but the one that just goes straight to a rabbit and jumps it.
The other dogs will quickly learn to stand around and wait on it. That type of dog will ruin a pack real quick.
