Tumor on the tongue

As we were preparing to return home after 2 weeks of chasing hare in the North Woods of Maine, we noticed our male was starting to drool and could not eat or drink. We drove straight thru back to Ohio and my son took the dog to the vet. X-rays showed a tumor on the dog's tongue. The vet said not much could be done, but did give the dog a steroid, anti-biotics, and pain meds. Does anyone have experience of this occurring to any of your dogs? Can anything be done? End results?

Tumor was not cancerous. The swelling was in the mouth, neck, down to the chest cavity. After a couple steroid shots and antibiotics, the swelling has went down enough for the dog to eat and drink again. Not totally recovered, but is showing a lot of improvement. The vet thinks an accident while hunting caused the swelling.
