Have a pup needs deer broke, Any advice? or Know Someone?

Post by Big River Beagles S »

Pup that runs an awsome rabbit and a monster check dog. I have popped her 4 times for deer not all out burn down just enough to make her quit I didn't want to ruin her but now its time to get it done and over with either break her or cull her but she is awsome for a pup one of the best ive seen.. So any suggestions would be great or any names of guys that do a good job of it. I have a good place to set her up. Nevr had one this hard core to break, the dog has no family history of being trashy. Scott

I would drive around until you find a deer and let her out. Wait till she is on it and give her a good 4 or 5 count and then give her a poke after she has turned away like the deer scent is after her. I did this twice in the fall and hit both of the dogs I had problems and gave them a poke a few more times this winter when I saw them nose a deer track this winter and last week both of them came back and sat by my feet when my buddies pup took a deer. I still don't trust them yet but that was nice to see. I know there is a guy down the road from me that has a deer pen and he breaks dogs for people in the pen if there is anybody who raises deer in your area they may do the same.

Thanks big mike I will try but I think it will take alot more than that I have buzzed her 4 times already but not on high and just fry her. I have a feeder deer come to every night I am going to start there but I know you can't train in the same place or they just won't run one there and will still take one somewhere else.

Yep definately don't holler for her when shocking. I would also suggest to not even use the tone. Let her get cranking good on the track and then introduce level 6 several times all the way back to you. When she comes back don't pay any attention to her. This works the best for me. I have had dogs that were hard to break but when I started doing this they seem to be broken a little easier. If they are young dogs I will always try to find a rabbit to put them on right after I have shocked them off of deer. Kind of gives them a little reminder of what they should be runnin.

I don't agree with Mountain Mafia. Repitition is the key not what he suggested which is burn them on 6 for 10 seconds and again till them come back to your feet.
Let them get good and hot on the trail and be where you can see their reaction. Like they said keep quiet and hit them for a few seconds- enough to make them stop and know something hurt. If they start nosing it again, then turn it up and make them stop. They should quit chasing now.
Do this again the next day. Try to get some rabbit running in there also. And again the next day till you see they are not interested.
You don't need to mash it till they are back at your feet. I want my dogs to turn down a deer. I don't want them to quit hunting and head back and hide under the truck every time they smell a deer.

I agree with gundog. I had a pup that started easy in the rabbit pen hunted great. First time out i shocked him on three different deer. Had to shock him a few other times but one time I got frustrated and went a little too heavy on the shock. After that if I we were out hunting you could watch him and he would be busting the brush and then if he would come across a deer path he would tuck his tail and pretty much quit. Had him out once and jumped a rabbit off a brushy bank that ran through a field and in the woods. Right before that there was a deer standing at the edge of the woods and the rabbit ended up runnning right where the deer was a few moments earlier. When he got to where the deer was he quit and came back to me. I thought I had ruined him but he came out of it pretty quick and is the best dog I have owned to date. He is not shy in any way but too much number 6 can set a dog back or even ruin them if taken too far. Live and learn!! I do still use level 6 for deer I just don't shock them after they have quit the track and show no interest. I have found that best thing for me is to start on rabbits in my pen. Then once they are running pretty good I take them out and find a deer. Walk the pup to where it was standing and shock them as soon as they act like they smell it even if they dont run it. It seems to help them associate deer scent as being bad and rabbit scent being good.

I can tell you right now from experience. If you absolutely don't make them regret they ever took that deer track then you are wasting your time. I usually don't hold the button down but I hit it many times all the way back to me. Just make sure they are collar broke good before you ever try to shock them on high levels.

Pressure breaking is the only way to go. You can break dogs from starting deer races but it's still up in the air wether or not they will go with other dogs that are running deer.

Guilty by assocation. I'll burn my hound if he goes with the other hounds.

Mountain Mafia, has the approach that all my hunting partners use.Everyone does things to suit them.No problem with that. Our way is to burn them on six until back at your feet or the truck.Usually when another dog starts a rabbit they join back in.If they can't take the treatment then they best stay away from deer.If not then we cull them.

BELIEVE ME FROM EXPIRENCE IF ONE IS NOT UST TO HIGH VOLTAGE YOU CAN DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD. DEER PROOFING TAKES TIME AND PATIENCE. IVE HAD SOME IT JUST TOOK LEVEL 3. BREAKING ONE FROM GOING WITH THE PACK IS TOUCHY TO. USALLY YOU BREAK ONE OFF DEER AND DONE IT RIGHT WHEN THEY HONOR A DOG RUNNING DEER HE OR SHE WILL BE BACK WHEN THEY FIND OUT WHATS GOING ON.MYSELF THOSE THAT ARE NATUARL DEER PROOF ARE NICE

I have this dog collar broke she has gotten bumped for a few sec. on 4 and she quit and came back but she went again the next time out I gave it to her on 3 for a about same amount of time had another young dog with her so I was watching her she never barked but went with this female so I bumped her also and I had to go get her she just climbed up in a dead fall and wouldn't come out but the pup I am concerned about doesn't seem to mind the collar blast and gets over it real quick, Guess I am going to have to just burn her down and see if that works guy told me to put collar around her belly and another around he rneck and use both on high at the same time. He said make sure youhave a tracker on her she might run and hide but just keep the heat on her till she either is back to your feet or quits going and lays down. he said broke 1 that they said couldn't be broke this way. I guess I would just as soon have her so scared of deer that she comes in when she smells them, I think over time she will get over the fear,
