A great female and a great reproducing female the rarest gem in the beagle world! I am a believer that the female is the strongest link in the chain. I believe, IMO, it is 65% the female traits and 35% male on a real good cross. Again, my opinion.

''This is a good tread to voice something that has brothered me for awhile. Their are some very nice females listed on the above responses. Proven reproducers, Field Champions, Mulipute Field Champions , Bench Champins, females with pedigrees that would fill any hound hall of fame. Yet, when ever a young hound comes out like gang busters in the field trial world, it's always "whose the sire of that pup?" "wow whose thats dogs daddy!!" . Quite frankly it is rare that anyone inquires, who the dam is, or the mother of the pup even comes up in the conversation. the stud gets all the credit, and the owner collects the stud fees, as if the female had nothing to do with the success of the pup, what so ever. why is this mentality, or lack of, out their??"
the above was taken from an earlier tread on this board , titled "females ".

male
reason why if u really have a great male that can stamp himself in pups then you have something, because in a normal life of a female they could be breed what 10 times or say, say 6 pups a litter, 60 pups, now you take a male, you could get 100 litters out of a male and they would yield 500 pups or more, now i think you would have a better chance finding another great dog out of 500 then out of 60 so to say. jmo

EMMA,
So what your saying is, even a blind squirrel can find a nut? Sorry , can't buy that logic.

I believe you have to have a good foundation "FEMALE" or you wont have anything in the long run!!

r w hawk...my logic is stat based on percents, do the math, you have a higher chance of getting a good dog from a male then female, based soley on numbers, more pups born from 1 male vs female. and you can hunt a male dog 365 days a year, can you do that with a female. but it still takes both to have something great, male and female.

One key to having that great female is. You have to breed her early and often to propetuate her as she may not produce at all or only with certain males. JMO.

I think its harder get a better female, even though them heat cycles have made me mad.Especially when they are run in getting ready to go too trials, then bam ol mother nature smacks your hand.I own a young female at this time i like as well as anything i have owned.
