I am trying to trap some rabbits I use a wooden box traps, I caught like a dozen this summer with little effort, but this winter having trouble. I used a horse sweet feed and apples this summer with good results, tried the same this winter with little success. I have tried rabbit feed ,apples and the sweet feed. It has been very cold and snowy here for a week and I have set my traps next to well traveled paths with no luck, My question is do I need to set my trap right in the runs or off to the side like I am doing there are a lot of new tracks around my traps just no takers. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try adding vanilla? That always helped when I had issues.

Find someone that raises rabbits. Take your traps and leave them under their rabbit hutches letting them get pissed and sh.t on by their tame rabbits for a week. Then take them traps to the woods.

Take traps back as needed to revamp them or make extra traps to rotate them.

You don't need a food source to draw rabbits when you got fresh pee and shhhhh.

An ol buck rabbit is always looking for action and an ol doe rabbit don't want no new hussy in her area.

I agree with getting your traps smelling like rabbit , also for bait try fresh green alfalfa if you can get it. When snow on ground works great. Rabbits feeding more on woody vegitation and alfalfa tends to work good also it does not go bad as fast like apples.

What if i put fresh rabbit poop in them from under tame rabbits the neighbors have a couple

A old trapper told me he sprayed his traps with apple cider in the winter. The sent stays around longer in the winter. Worked for me.

Does anyone have an answer to the second half of the question, he wants to know if you're better off with the trap in the run, or beside it???

There are funnel areas and main travel / escape routes, I set my traps right in the the path of these heavily used roadways. If your trapping you neighbors yard rabbits to help with guarding his garden spot, set your trap right where they leave the yard going into the brush. The thicker it is the better, this is a funnel escape route, there may be 4 or 5 of these spots but it's where the rabbit runs when spooked from the yard 99% of the time.
We got a spot down at the creek where we throw out the vegetable peelings, the rabbits always come up the creek to nibble on what been thrown out. They're eating on the briar, sumac & willow right now, it is said the bark gives them what they need to make body heat and stay warm, also their teeth constantly grow longer and they need to wear them down by constant gnawing.

I never set mine right in the run, they just make a new run around it; set it close by it so as not to disturb thier natural routine. Not in the brush, but close, so they feel safe. In the winter, try shelled corn. They like the carbs. I agree with some rabbit poop in back, they feel like the trap has been used and is safe. Good luck.

Has anyone here used fox urine? I have a club member that chatted with some guys down south and that is all they supposedly use on the trap pans? If so have any of you had any luck with it? im having no luck with apples either and am contimplating ordering a pint of urine from a trapper magazine but in my mind it sounds crazy!

Jon call me, I have been pounding them with red delicious apples key is scenting up your traps once I catch a rabbit I leave it in there for a day and let it scent my trap. I am actually trapping rabbits out of my pen to many in there Ive trapped 15 or 20 and probable catch 5 or so more

his first post was a year and a day ago. i guess we just tend to do the same stuff the same time of year every year.

Yea 1/13/15 to 1/14/16 i think thats a year and a day. I learned alot in a years time its about scent and trap placement

Put it in a good spot and pee in it!!
