Re: The price of a hound?
i guess they are worth what ever someone will pay!! jmo
Re: The price of a hound?
It depends how much you want that particular dog. Someone asks a price if I feel it's a hound I need (or want) I investigate further. That would apply for a 8 week old pup or a dog with whatever title. If I want it I'd buy it. Other than the fact they are a living breathing thing dogs are a commodity, buyers ultimately determine the value.
A seller can place any price he wants on a hound, but ya still need a azz to sit in the seat.

Re: The price of a hound?
The value of a dog is in the eye of the beholder. One thing I would add to a pup is if they are from a proven cross or from a bitch that has produced proven litters. Most stud dogs have other pups on the ground that prove they can sire good offspring but many fail to consider the female side of a cross as being just if not more important. IMO titles in and of themselves mean very little and what has more impact on me is the offspring and their offspring. Regardless, there is no guarantee with any litter but knowing the parents are good rabbit dogs and their offspring are good rabbit dogs only stacks the outcome of a pup in your favor of getting a rabbit dog.
Re: The price of a hound?
Ive bought 4 pups in the last couple of years. All range from about 2 weeks to under 2 years right now and paid from $200-$350. They are still young and they may not be worth a nickle when they are older. I dont go to many trials and have never saw any of the parents run but did talk to several others that had watched them. 2 of the daddys were FC's, 2 were IFC's. 1 of the mamas was an IFC, 1 was a fc, and the other 2 each has wins. I paid $350 for the cross where both parents were IFCs and that was a female.
I talked to another guy that has several FC's in his kennel and he was asking about my pup. He gave me a hard time for paying $200 for a pup. He said he never sells his pups but gives them away to people that will give them a shot. I guess everyone has diff views on what a pup is worth no matter the fancy titles.
If this has anything to do with the fella that has the $750 pups if he can sell them for that more power to him. They look like they could be some good ones. I'm sure one could find a lot worse things to spend the money on and if they turn out they could bring someone many years of enjoyment.

Re: The price of a hound?
Just because you pay more dosant mean the dog/pup is better. I agree that a dog is only worth what someone will pay and I'm sure that there will be fools pay 750 for the pups. If i wanted a Reggie dog, there are just tons of pups out of him that are sold. Will they all make dogs...NO. Will the 750 pups make dogs....I wouldnt bet on it.

Re: The price of a hound?
in my opinion those people that are paying those ridiculous prices for pups are paying for nothing other then a piece of paper at that stage (being pups). period. but at the same time you cant knock the guys that are selling them for those prices. look at it this way, you have two dogs that have proven themselves in the field and those pups are selling for 500-750 (not trying to use the reggie/destiny cross as an example but it seems most are refering to it, so i dont want it to look bad im just using it as a reference). on the other hand you have guys using brood females from what they consider to be a proven pedigree (lol) that the female hasnt proven sh!$ in the field and those guys are breeding those females to ifc and fc's and selling those pups for 300-400$.... now if your asking me if id rather have a dog out of the brood female that could be (u dont know bc she's a brood female)a cold trailing, gunshy, no hunt in her mongrel with an out of this world pedigree for 400 bucks or a pup from two proven ifc's or fc's for $100 dollars more or even $200 more... ill spend the extra money and take my chances... i learned the hardway the last time i bought a dog from a cross with a BROOD female!!! i wouldnt care if they were asking $1000 dollars a pup if i want it and i have the money ill pay for it. if its not what i expected when i got it started, i knew that was a chance i took when laying the money down....
Re: The price of a hound?
This kind of post seems to get on here about once a month. It is fun to read the responses since there is no answer to the question. I always like to put: "You can pay $100 for a $100 dog or $400 for a hundred dollar dog but you still have a $100 dog."

Re: The price of a hound?
Just paid 4 digits for a quality FC female with a partner. Would do it again tomorrow for the quality i want to build on, JMO. I am confident in asking $400 for a pup off of her and a complimentary male of lines I want to continue with. Paid 4 digits for a really nice 2 year old that is what we wanted as well. I am blessed with a great job so that helps alot!!!!
I don't have a problem with anyone asking 200 or 750, or anywhere in between if the hounds are quality and what I want. I have one hobby I spend money on DOGS. I enjoy them and invest for my kennels future, but first for me!!!

Any deal is a good deal as long as the buyer and seller are happy.

Every once and awhile I walk into Petland just for kicks....it is sickening to watch people FINANCING a some made up registry beagle pup for a fair price of $999.
Friends of mine paid $2k+ for some sort of mountain dog puppy from Petland....you can find pups of this breed from a great reputable kennel for half that price. They wanted THAT PUPPY....so they paid the price and the pup has turned out to be a great dog for them. Right or Wrong it is THEIR money to do with as they see fit. The same goes for beagles, if you don't like the price...find one you do like within your price range.
People buy different breed puppies for $500-$1000 all the time and most will end up at the dog pound within 2yrs because the family is tired of caring for the dog or they do not understand what the breed needs and become frustrated with it. At least any beagle will more than generally run a rabbit...how they run the rabbit is subjective to what the owner feels is correct.
