What Bloodlines are they running in Southern Maryland?

Want to get into trials in Southern Maryland. Don't want to have too fast or too slow hounds. What is a good med-fast hound to run, anyone know what they are running? Bloodlines ?? thanks

There are 2 clubs in Southern ,Maryland. Friendship Hills Beagle Club who likes a steadier ,line control type dogs and Southern Prince Georges Beagle Club who runs more accomplishment over style type of hounds "Quicker", like all clubs it depends on the actual judges...You need to decide which style of dog suites you..Southern Prince Georges Beagle Club is dangerously low on thier rabbit population with severe predation, illegal hunting on their grounds and farming that has taken a huge toll with all the spraying and cultivating that has been going on the last 2 years..Friendship Hills Beagle Club on the other hand has plenty of rabbits and good running grounds and great turnouts on trials..The Stubby,Pro,Bluecreek Bear,Hokie High,Diamond II lines work well.Southern PGCBC runs Kalagha,Shake,Gay,Wingates, etc...

What happened to those "woodpont" dogs you drove all the way to Ohio to buy? You could have purchased some pups from the members at the club for half that price and saved yourself some gas money. One thing to remember " some of them "Big Players" will play you like a fool. Better figure out what you want and like before throwing your money away...

Rabbit Huntin,,, you are exactly right, you live and learn. One of the pups got killed by a car and i have the other 9 mo old here trying to put into a starting pen. And those "Woodpont" hounds i went to Ohio are perfect for me, BUT I also want to Trial here in the area so i have to run what is acceptable in this area. I have been here for over 8 years and could not fine anyone in the area to teach or talk to me about trials here..... and it is still that way, like pullin teeth. I will learn little by little, Thank you for your information.... are you runnin in the trial on the 25th

Dogrunner, Pro dogs can and will do well at Friendship Hills Beagle Club as well as most other clubs, but at SPGCBC they simply don't have enough foot to be effective, thats why none of the Friendship Hills beaglers run their dogs at SPGCBC's trials and remember the judges each club uses plays a huge roll but I have seen some really nice Pro dogs and have come to appreciate and like them...

CJ , The clubs run only a few trials each year along with a few Two Couple Pack trials. The judges at the clubs 'Non Licensed" trial's are usually club members and depending on who it is will determine what style of dogs place that day just like most other trials. As you can see, a dog that may place one day may not place any other day, thats why I say get dogs you like to hunt and run and if they turn out to be good then take them to some trials and see what happens..Your Woodpont dogs would not be too strong for SPGCBC if they have some line control.Speed helps if you can keep a rabbit moving and not overrun the line and cause loss after loss...But if trialing is what you like then you need dogs that are old enough to trial that can handle pack pressure... As far as people not helping I don't know what to tell you, go get Hounds & Hunting, Better Beagling, or The American Beagler magazines and follow who is winning and placing consistently at your style of trials and you can also attend the trials and see if thats what your looking for....Next time you get a dog or pup you might want to have a pen lined up before you buy an unstarted pup....

Good post and feedback.

I have one comment about Rabbit Huntin Fool statement about Woodpont hounds not being to strong to run at SPGCBC. I have owned 8-10 Woodpont hounds and ran with his pack on many occasions. There is no way you can run them at the AKC clubs on the East Coast, except AKC Large Pack. You might be able to squeeze a very small female into a PBGA or SPGCBC trial, but that is about it. Don't even think about a big male. They are Mid-West dogs.

Rabbit Huntin Fool I believe you owned a dog that Bob Keese now owns named Sinbad. He has placed at SPGCBC I think. I know Bob placed him in PBGA. Woodpont hounds in general are quite a bit faster than him.

CJ if you are looking to trial here in Maryland you should look at bloodlines from around here and not the normal Mid-West bloodlines. As far as the bloodlines Rabbit Huntin Fool gave you I would agree with him.

Hello Jason, No I never placed Sinbad at SPGCBC, however I did trial him there but he placed in VA,NY,PA,New England circuit..Sinbad wasn't even the fastest dog at SPGCBC..He just wondered a tad too far out in the check area for the judges liking and thats why I sold him..At SPGCBC's last trial which was the Maryland State Championship, a solid Branko dog won the trial as no other dog could stay close to him and he didn't lose the line much for the others to claim it...I also owned a dog off Canadian FTC Yel Line Tokio that took a 4th at SPGCBC Lic trial...Southside Beagle Club in VA also runs a strong dog as Sinbad took NBQ there 2 years ago.So if your dog runs hard but straight and has line control he will place at both clubs...Also Wingates bred dogs have also placed at these trials so come try out the clubs some time...Kalagha,Tank,Buckshots Mr Bill bred dogs have done the best their as they can usually stay up with those faster dogs but cut them to pieces at the checks get into the briars with alot of hunt which judges love....

Hi Guys. No, Jason, my hounds aren't "Mid-West dogs". They'd get blown away there. But they are quite a bit faster than what I've seen east of the Appalachians. I'm not sure why everyone likes such a conservative hound over there. I prefer a little more excitement.
