Lookin' for some expert advice. Help the newbie out.

Post by sturmgewehr »

Hi 'yall! I am new here. I found this place after desperatley searching out some tips on picking out a good pup. My family and I decided to get a beagle a while ago for a family pet, but I also want one to train to hunt with. I've seen tons of pups and could probably recite every name of every breeder in southern california (where I live) but I am glad for my pickiness for I realized that when I do find some I like I am not sure of the traits and characteristics I should look for in a young pup. I have raised and trained many dogs before, but not for something like hunting. I am relying on your experience and advice to help make the decision. Anything you all have to offer even if it seemes trivial might make sense to my overly picky nature. Thanx for reading and please flood this thread!!

There is only one beagler I know in CA that has hunting dogs, his name is Don Potts. Obviously, there are more, but I only know Don. Check out his website at http://www.beaglesunlimited.net there you should find an e-mail address for him and you can contact him directly. Good luck in your search.

Hey Joe! How ya been? Man, Tiny sure put a lot of work into his website and keeping track of pups weights, photos and such! I have never seen records that well put together. I like how the runt has grown up to be as big as the others! Those sure are some pretty sharp looking pups he has, I really like the female he still has available. Take care!

Hey Randy, things have been good, hope all is well with you and Shannon.
Tiny has a really good website.I kinda eyed that same female myself.
The Molly female that he has is a littermate to Bubba.

I would also check for straight legs, the pups bite, and check out the pedigree, you will be able to see what kind of blood line they have been useing.
