Pedigrees - How to use them and how far back?

Well lets see about james d.No profile,no email.Hmmm.I see it took you two attempts to figure out if you would appear as anonymous. That is real bold.I don't usually reply to such drivel.I've had hounds most of my life.I read these boards months before posting anything.I talked to many people at hunts and more importantly used my eyes watching dogs run.
The Short's thread on spo was over whether they had brains and foot speed, upper med.I stated I had seen some that had just those qualities.I thought that it was in poor taste to make such degrading statements..I was not alone in that assessment.
The other was over statments made by a judge. You could have taken Short's Pro out of those threads and put in any major - or not so major stud dog's name and my comments would have been the same. Why? For me it was about fairness and appearances period. No one stud holds all the keys to success in a breeding program.I don't know why people bicker so over such.
I have never and will never bad mouth any bloodline on a public forum as this or RHO or spo.Period .I'm here to learn and share info and care not whether the info comes from a 19 year old or 90 year old.
I truly enjoy all the post by Fuzz and Pete,Tom,Alswamper Bev Chris Beglnut Gary Houston and indeed a host of others,to many to list. All good top notch people.
It is a shame petty small minded people are allowed to hide behind "guest" logins and spew venom. Instead of adding knowledge and or something of interest aka hound history, family related or not you choose to show the net world what a total clueless jerk you are.I pity you and will ignore you in the future....

Some os the ARHA Hall of Fame Hounds are or were SINGLE registered in a new name with the new owner with His Kennel Name on the Papers. I bet most if not all of them were AKC registered.
Just like "GUNSMOKES" Lizard Creek Tadpole
"Gunsmoke" was added to the ARHA PAPERS but his AKC papers say "LIZARD CREEK TADPOLE" Tadpole is a very nice male and Finished in the ARHA and AKC and has produced some great hounds so far and hopefully will be in the Hall Of Fame one day!
Thanks,

A few days back you said the short dogs were fast and now you say they are upper medium. Maybe you should call pd and tell him you just changed the speed of his dogs. All you guys that know that short dogs are slow to medium, they are now upper medium to fast and don't argue with hunt6 because he has had hounds all his life. WOW! You were all proud because you owned a pro dog because he has so many spo field champions and now you say you don't want a pup bred to take advantage of field trial conditions which is what the short dogs are. You should run for politics man! If you think short dogs are the smartest rabbit dogs you have led a sheltered life. Having hounds all your life don't mean nothing if you just fell out of the dummy tree. Get back over to the spo board with your spo buddies and leave the real world of rabbit dogs alone.

hey james d,
what's the deal about hunt6?? what is the source of your mistrust?? i take it y'all have a personal relationship away from the internet,,,, y'all seem to have a history. stress and conflict is a terrible thing and certainly can be hazardous to your health. i know that one of the main reasons that i am actively trying to get back into beagling is for the peace of mind that it brings me. i am a public school teacher in an urban environment which is inherently high stress. for the past dozen years or so i have been involved with H.S. sports, which taxes an individual timewise and other ways as well. by next school year i hope to be running my dogs nearly every day, instead of watching film and taping ankles. while i enjoyed friday nights, the rest of the grind got to be a bit much.
the reason i am going into this is that my dogs and hunting have been a real refuge for me, and i really hope and expect to spend a lot more time in it, as i gain knowledge and get involved in other aspects of the hound game. arguing and getting into one-upsmanship with other houndsmen is something i certainly hope to avoid. it would be a negative for me personally and i don't see how it would contribute to the group. i hope you guys get a chance to talk about your differences and come to some resolution to your difficulties. peace out,,, as my students say, dosgris

Look, I aint no expert on dogs but I do know that apparently, regardless of speed, that those Short's dogs are pretty good. Seems to be winning an awful lot.
As for the speed argument, who cares as long as they bring them around to the gun. I've said it once and I'll say it again, I've seen deer beagles that would run circles around any rabbit dog I have ever seen and I guarantee they had not one paper on them. Fast, medium, slow, who is to say what is what. Fast to you may be slow to me and vice versa. I think my dogs are to slow but some say different. To be honest, I dont care as long as they run it right.
James, you need to take a chill pill. Hunt6 was trying to be helpful. Then here you come. Down here we call that disrespectful. Not welcome in my house or anyone elses. I know guys that hunt Short's Pro dogs and kill 100's of rabbits a year. SO field trial conditions or not, they must do something right. If you guys have a personal thing going then do what we do, take it outside. Otherwise, respect this board and quit it.

dogs
The debate goes on! The paper debate seems to be a 2 headed critter. It looks like there can be plus and minuses to both arguments about papers. Although I think good record keeping is important in any scientific endeavor, breeding dogs is not predictable so that a duplicated experiment or cross won't always have the same result no matter what. When you take the science out of breeding dogs, you still have a good chance at success because breeding dogs is as much art as it is science. Experience will help you more in the long run than papers will when it comes to breeding hunting dogs. Record keeping has become a FOR PROFIT element now instead of its original intention of breeding better dogs. If the papers are used only for that then they are worthless. The expense involved makes them less than practical. Records are important and should be kept, the question is by who? Each individual is responsible at the present for recording the proper info. Might as well just leave it in each persons hands to record family history on their own. It is just as affective as the registries. The registries are only as good as the people using them. If you had no registries I don't think the beagle breed would be worse off. You would still have Beagles and breeders would still go queitly about breeding ability into them. Prospective buyers would still have to do the research in looking for the good stock just like they should now if they want a good dog from good parents or families. We must ask ourselves how many of us have been able to buy a good dog because of his papers? Very few I would guess. How many have bought worthless dogs because of papers? I know I have and it can leave a bitter taste in your mouth. If I had done the leg work like I should have, this may not have happened as much in the past. This lessens the importance of papers to me. Most breeds were formed without the aid of papers. Is there a lesson there?
Anything farther back then three generations will have no influance. As for AKC their usefullness is in their ability to keep good records. I once bought a duel registered hound who I knew both the sire and dam and the family behind them; AKC had the pedigree right but the other registry didn't. Even had the spelling wrong on the reg. certificate.
