A general forum for the discussion of hunting with beagles, guns, clothing and other equipment and just talking dawgs! (Tall tales on hunting allowed, but remember, first liar doesn't stand a chance)
I appreciate you all! I can be somewhat of a “SA” at times, and I cause a little friction.
My intent was to get other fellow Beaglers thinking and taking more responsibility in their choices pertaining to breeding their beagles. There are way to many beagles out there that definitely aren’t breed quality, and the market is way over flooded with them.
My resent experiences with rewriting our local animal control ordinance really did help get me thinking more, and I myself have made some changes as a breeder. I’m very specific in who I let my “weaned pups” go to out of my kennel. If I sell any I always put a “buy back guaranty” on them, and they have to go to Combination Hunting & AKC SPO field trial homes. Because that is the format I’m most interested in. I myself also breed for a vigorous jumpdog that is very hard working, and will almost drop before they quit. I just got home a few minutes ago. I ran beagles till 11PM tonight. As bad as the heat's been here in North Central Indiana lately I think I’m going to do more “night time running”. I have a fair number of pups under a year old that I'm working, and I don’t want to “overheat” them and set them back in their training. I have a handful than are showing high promise, and I’m in the process of starting a litter also.
Good Beaglin everyone!

Hey Keystone Kid,
I forgot to mention something else. You do have two of the prettiest lemon and white pups I think I've ever seen on the trading board. I wouldn't mind the first one in line...... . I've been looking for one for some time now but the getting one here is a big problem due to my screwy schedule. Any ideas on how to get that pup up this way? It would definately get all the hunting it could handle and SPO would be the only way to go for me because our club used to be LPH (went to GB) and I wouldn't give two cents for many of the LPH hounds I've seen. (Just my opinion, observation and prefernce) Oh and what the heck time zone you ole boys hunting in that lets you run till 11pm and post at 10pm? I need me some of those 25 hour days to help get all my stuff done! If you have anyone coming up this way I'll send the check for that first pup, and put up money for gas to get it here.
Peace,
NYH
When my life on earth is ended....this is all I'm gonna say...Lord I've been a hard working pilgrim on the way!
New York Hillbilly, the post times are wrong, I posted near mid-night.
Call me about the pups if your interested. I'll give you details on the phone. I don't want to get off topic on this post. Call between 8am & 11pm your time.

I try to post situations in which I have experience. I may not have sufficient data to reach a valid conclusion but I think that if enough honest beaglers would give their experiences then the rest of us could draw our own conclusions.
I don't believe quoting an "Old Timer", "They say", or "I believe" has any merit to this discussion, unles some examples are given to back it up.
For example, I said in my experience Show dogs had less stamina than the cotton tail dogs with which I compared them. Several beaglers indicated that adding show blood to their line had added toughness and stamina. That is exactly the experience that I had. I bred a Gay Baker bitch to Show Champion, Bedlam Tiger Talk. The pups were tough as nails. For three consequetive evenings I turned loose a bitch from that litter with a new pack each evening, and they ran all night long. I would catch them running the next morning.
My one example means nothing. However, when I consider that others have had similar experiences I take notice.
The idea that getting a particular dog in super condition will make it competitive in endurance events is bogus. I'm not implying that conditioning is not important, but if I have a dog that is a quitter after a couple hours on cottontails, I woulen't waste my time driving twelve hours taking him to run hare. I have owned beagles for over thirty years and have seen several dogs (not show bred) that could not run for more than a couple of hours. These were not the short legged poorly constructed dogs that you normally see in the Deep South Trials. These were run to catch type dogs with long straight legs. No amount of conditioning would improve their stamina to the point that they would run longer.
I still would like the name of an AKC show champion or one of its litter mates that finished the first three hours of a LPH Trial. I'm not trying to beat up on show dogs I am sincerely intersted in validating the claims that the AKC Standard, as it is being interpreted by todays show judges, rewards proper movement for endurance events.
I think it's pretty clear to most rabbit hunters that once again the field trial events have lost sight of the purpose of the breed.
