Found this little info about gps for locating dogs.. probably would work on a person too..
Environmental Studies has released the GPS PRO Dog tracking system for medium to large sized dogs. A GPS receiver and a GSM modem with special software are incorporated into the dog collar. You simply call the telephone number of the GPS-GSM dog collar with your mobile phone. The GPS receiver in the collar calculates the position of the dog and sends the co-ordinates immediately in a SMS text to your mobile phone. A VHF beacon allows hunters to track and train their dogs. Individual frequency adjustment is possible. An activity sensor tells via the mobile phone if the animal is in motion or on point. The system will work on the following GSM networks: Europe 900/1800MHz, North America 900/1900MHz and Asia 900/1800MHz.
Didn't think it would take long for them to come up with something like this..

lost dog
Hey Big Head do you think they will come out with one for golf balls ?
Sounds pretty good. I wish they could make the chips on the beacon small enough so they could be concealed on or in the dog. Dog thieves are wise to tracking collars and rarely take dogs to the vet to let them be identified by the I.D. microchips. Also it would be nice if something like that would not require the buyer to take out a second mortgage.

finding lost dogs
Dale I was actually doing a search on the web for information about gps use in golf course mapping and ran across that info. I don't remember the site but will see if I can find it again.
Anthony they already have golf balls with a tracking device in them and a small hand held receiver. They advertise them on the Golf Channel all the time.. I just hate the added weight of the chain saw and the scuba outfit to get to where it says most of mine are located...
