What is a windsplitter?

I have seen this term used from time to time. Just curious what it is describing. Thanks,

It is a subjective term meaning any dog that is consitantly faster than yours.

To the old conventional brace trialerss, any dog that could run a rabbit was a windsplitter.

To me a windsplitter is a dog that has to have the front regardless.

A windsplitter is a dog that runs game with it's nose in the air instead of on the ground. Usually has a lot of foot. I like this type of hound. They will at times overshoot the line but a good one will pick it back up in short order. This is when they put there nose down but once picked back up the head rises and off they go.

Wind Splitter: A fast and furious driving hound. Usually not very faithful to the line of scent and over runs a lot.

This is the definition that I found that I believe more accurately describes
the definition of the term "wind splitter." Dogs running scent with their
heads up but still maintaining control of the line by not constantly over
running the track at a fast speed are not considered "wind splitters."
The term wind splitter is not considered a favorable term to describe
a hound. Not trying to label or bash anyones dog here but simply
giving a definition of a houndsman term used to describe a dog.

I consider it simply a fast hound one that runs with one thing on his mind to catch and kill the rabbit yes they do over-run some but pick it back up really quick this is the type of hound I like and run I guess thats why my kennel name is windsplitters kennel of course they are not for everone thats probaly why their are so many different formats in beagling I guess all in all hunt and feed what you like.

There is a big difference in a fast speed heads up dog that runs the wind scent and a fast dog that runs tracks right where the rabbit ran when you saw it.
I call the first one a windsplitter. That's what I prefer.
Same with bird dogs, most prefer a winder, all you see on TV and few prefer a trail um up bird dog.

All mine run with 1 thing on thier mind , catch the rabbit.That's the way they are bred so maybe they would fall into the windsplitter catagory. :-)

jumpdog1 if I am not mistaken I watched your dog run at KTV club one time not for sure but I think its name was boss or bossman I liked him.

Danny, these folks is as full of hot air as one of them Good Year Blimp Balloons. I couldn't figure it out cuz I never heard of such a thing as a windspitter but I asked my wife Nary May, and she said a windspitter is one of them fellas on the radio song she heard and she also said that it was one of her favorites. She says it was a boy named Jim Croce who sang it and goes like this " Don't step on Supermans Cape, don't spit into the wind, don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger and don't mess around with Jim!" I think a windspitter is someone who goes around doing really dumb things! Some folks are like that!
