JUST A QUESTION FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE KNOW!!!!!!!!!

Post by hillbilly »

OK first of all not trying to make any changes nor do i intend to offend, as some of the post that i have read on the subject of dogs over the 15 inch size limit..... a good friend of mine is a beagler and runs his dogs on fox in some beagle on fox trials and he ask me the questions about the size limit of 15 inches as follows.. why when all of our beagles go back to the old country of england which has a larger limit of 16 inches do we here choose to run a smaller hound? i don't know the answer but i thought that someone may know the history.....and why that standard was implimented in the u.s.

In this country wooden buildings normally have 2 by 4 studs, 16 inches apart from center to center. We are not on metric like England.
If you were cutting a hole in an old chicken house, or build a new house for a kennel, when you cut the plywood door hole edge of stud to edge of stud it would be a hole 15 inches. The standard was so the dogs wouldn't have to squat or skin their backs racing through the doors.

I have seen many of dogs in our one hour trials that were below 13 inches outrun and make many 15 inch dogs look slow.

Rest assured, crewchief, the beagle is a direct descendant of the wolf. ;) So is a Chihuahua, Brittany, Boxer, or any other variety of domestic dog. Methinks it was mankind who did all the selective breeding, not the Almighty.

hillbilly, I'm getting ready to make a post that you can have some input. Gonna do it in a different thread, though.

alabama i don't have any dogs that are 15 inches WIDE but what i was interested in was the history... and heck i like my little 13 inch dog and my 15 but i thought my friend had an interesting question and i think we are going to be seeing alot of bigger dogs and one reason is the 17 inch limit that the fox runners are using and there seem's to be alot of intrest in that sport in the last few years......some say the fastest growing hound sport in the world.....

i.e. bev's questions

You can correct me if I am wrong as the English standard may have changed since I last checked several years back. Here is how I believe it is in England. 15 inches or below is still the ideal height. 16 is the DISQUALIFICATION limit. A dog is faulted according to how far over 15 it is. Besides that, he probably has scuff marks on his back from running in and out of the kennel. LOL Dan M

English standard is 16 inches...........if the link here doesnt take you right to the thread on Liam's Hunt Directory, go to the hunt forum, its on the second page called A Question About Size. http://www.hunting-directory.co.uk/cgi- ... 1153927037 Might also add that the running is different over there due to the terrain conditions and the game itself. They hunt European hare which is essentially a jack rabbit. They are not hunting in deep woods but the open fields and such for the most part. They also run to catch (and always have) which may play a part in why they like a leggy, tall hound.

That would mean the hole is 15 inches wide, not tall. Maybe that means we should run 15" wide dogs. ROFLMBO
