With all due respect, that DOG FOOD TEST does have quite a few flaws.
Here's what I see as flawed:
6) If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats
in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points
Some formula's are made to be ONE PROTEIN SPECIFIC for the purpose of dogs with sensitivities (ie: Lamb and Rice, Duck and Potato, etc) There is no reason to penalize a food for only using one protein source with a specific purpose in mind. As a matter of fact, food with one protein and one grain (or carb) probably has MORE meat protein in it than food with several sources.
8 ) If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3points
Corn is not a bad product when used correctly. It is high in Linoleic Acid, vitamins, and minerals and does help to add additional protein. When it's used in it's whole form (and not broken into fragments) it's quite alright as long as it's not the main protein source.
9) If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 morepoints
Again, corn is not bad! A food with whole ground corn should not be penalized for it's choice to use it.
10) If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2
points
I don't agree with this. Chicken fat is a great way to add Omega 3 fatty acids and dogs that may be sensitive to chicken, are not normally sensitive to the purified fat.
11) If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic
to other protein sources), subtract 2 points
HUH????? Why would that be a penalty? Lamb is a great protein source, especially for dogs that may not be worked quite as hard or dogs that are older.
14) If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isnâ?Tt allergic to
beef), subtract 1 point
What the heck is wrong with BEEF???? It's a great protein source for dogs that are not allergic. Otherwise, why would you feed it in the first place, duh!
15) If it contains salt, subtract 1 point
Laws that regulate dog food, state that salt (sodium) must be added to all commercial kibble. Where it falls on the ingredient list is the tell-tell sign of a better food.
2) If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or
nutritionist, add 5 points
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!! I wonder if one of those groups wrote this "Test", lmao
3) If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points
This is just ridiculous. There is no evidence that says a baked food is better than extruded foods. As a matter of fact, baked kibble is cooked at a higher temp than the low-temp extrution process that is used by most companies these days.
8 ) If the food contains barley, add 2 points
Barley has recently been removed from several Super-Premium foods for lack of evidence that it is good for dogs. Some dogs have shown adverse reactions (allergies, sensitivities, etc) to it.
13) If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point
This is a false sense of security as most foods don't add enough to be theraputic.
Just thought I would throw in my 2 cents

Bunny Runner Your posts are Great and Very informative BUT what i would like to know is
WHAT food would YOU recomend that MOST beaglers can Get at thier local area that is UNDER $25 for a 50lb bag????????????
All the ones that i have seen you recomend Are not Cost effective for the average beagler with more than 4 dogs or cannot be purchased in the local Area What we need is a food that is good for the Dogs But also good for the houndsman!!!!

The dog food test is a TOOL! like any other Tool is just to guide a person on what food might be right for their dog. The real test though is How does your dog look and feel? If you feed table scraps and your dog looks good and lives long and feels good then so be it. If you feed 40.00 a bag food same thing goes. I for one just got a free bag of Black and Gold dog food. I don't really care for the ingredients but, It won't hurt my pack to eat it. I am going to get the Costco food as I love the ingredients. If my dogs food costs more than MINE then there is a problem here!! LOL

TC, it wouldn't matter WHAT I recommend (brand wise) it's what works for you dog(s). Every dog is different, but recognizing better foods (or in your case what you can add to foods to make them better) is the important thing. My recommendation of Nutro, is, well, more a suggestion than anything else. While I fed Nutro for a short time (and my dogs did fine on it) it's not something that I felt I wanted to feed full time. It is readily available and I feel it's is of better quality than some of the other foods. I'm not a fan of foods that are full of by-products, multiple grains and fragments, or generically listed ingredients, so if I made a statement that came across as a "bash" of someones choice, it was only my preference based on what I have learned about better quality ingredients in dog foods. I do believe that "you are what you eat" as it relates to our dogs nutrition as well as ours.
Cost is always a determining factor for many of us with alot of dogs. There aren't many great foods (my interpretation of great) that are under $25, but there are some decent mid-grade foods that are definately a step up from the lower grade foods out there. Blackwood is a very good premium food (not available every where), Prism, Kirkland (made by Diamond) has shown to be a good food as well (and at a decent price), ProPac, and Exceed (available at Sam's) can all be considered good mid-grade foods. Of course, not every food is going to be available to every person, but I"m sure that if you check the store locators on the websites, you'll find somewhere semi-close that carries better foods. One thing that I have started doing, is adding extra protein, fat, and other enhancements during heavy exercise times. Similarly to the way sled dogs are fed. While I have complete confidence in my choice of foods for my dogs, the add-ons are to "up" the energy in my foods and LOWER the carbs (that can make them fat).
What I choose to feed my dogs, may not work for others, and vise-versa. I am in email contact with a couple of other beaglers frequently that have switched over to better foods and it's working great for them.
My feeding style is based on what I have gleaned from my education, additional independant research, and personal experience.
While I, personally, wouldn't feed Ol'Roy, I'm sure that your dogs are doing fine on it with the additions you are adding, because that is what you have stated. You know your dogs and how they react to the feeds they are getting. No one has THAT experience except you.
It's really great to see that people are more aware of what they are feeding their dogs. It really does make a difference when the dogs are getting what THEY need.

It was posted to a "list" that I'm on. I do not know where it originally came from. I just passed it along as something I thought was interesting. Its definately not the be all to end all for me when choosing food but, it does give you something to think about ;-)Spruce Ridge Beagler wrote:Just out of curiosity, where did the "dog food rating system" come from?

I'm sure no matter what we feed,,, they get sick of it in a few months!!! Thats why we feed raw steak once a month and canned chicken and rice Euk every other week... This keeps em happy so far!!!

PS Savannah and Annie Mae love to have their steak right after a 1/2 mile walk on the treadmill!!!! Its easy to pull off,, all we have to do is hang a Eukanuba Puppy Biscuit in front of em and they'll walk till they DROP!!!!! If we want em to run, we put em on it together!!!

I like that idea of switching now and then. At least you stand a chance of correcting some sort of deficiency. And, I wouldn't want to eat the same thing every day forever myself. And in cold weather, I like to serve it up hot and moist with some added fat, animal or just some sort of veggie oil, preferably not soybean oil. Also mix in some canned dog food and table scraps now and then. Heresy, eh?

Leah this all makes sense to me, I would often compare ingredients, and ended up with Purena Chicken/Rice, and Diamond Lamb/Rice. My Vet once gave me coupons for Euk and IAM's when I was breeding Dauchunds, and they wouldn't eat it. That kind of raised my eye brows? Then they would hit the Lamb/Rice like they were starving!
