Growling

I was just wondering can you break a dog that wants to growl at other dogs in the field. This is the first time I have really had this problem. The dog seems to be fine when running. But sometimes while hunting or when first put down he will growl toward the other dogs. Has anyone ever broke a dog from doing this or is this something that will be a major problem.

I had a dog named Slim that would do this at times. He would growl at dogs out in the field and fight constantly. I culled him, because he was a nuisance.

my male has one dog he will growl and think about fighting, just one Jim...he hates that dog. But take them off lead and he will hunt with him and never say a word. Put them back on the leash and anything goes. I think he is a professional about it.

Have you considered a shock collar?

i had one ten years ago. i kenneled him up with 3 other big males and walked away. i heard the fight start but i let them work it out. he never had a issue after that. he hunted fine and even turned into a real nice kennel mate. dont let him get away with it. either reach down and smack. or poke him with the collar.

I've got a gip that I call "gator" for that reason.
It is her biggest fault.
She has nipped a few dogs, will growl on the lead strap, and will jump on non-beagles. You can throw her down in a pack and she hunts and runs fine. If she is hunting (not running) and sees a coonhound, collie, mut, or any non-beagle she is going to fight it.
Her record is 0-19, but she is still trying to improve it (No kidding I started keeping track of the dogs that have whipped her. She doesn't take it personally though. After taking one, she gets up and hunts like nothing happened).

Her sire was the same way. That is one fault I can deal with because she is nice hound the rest of the time. (Her and the sire both have a ton of hunt, and that is why I got her).

I have seen quite a few males that will growl on the lead strap, in the box, or as soon as you put them down. It rarely causes problems.

He isn't a real old dog. He is only 2. You put a collar on him and he is fine. Take it off and he is fine. But before he will growl when first turned out. He dont fight just growl. Today I put him with my old dog and he settled his self down. I think he will be ok now.

i will not allow a dog to act agressive while on a lead or any other time. there are way to many other nice hounds out there and bullets are real cheap.

What faults do your dogs have?
Why didn't you put a bullet in their head?

All dogs have faults, the little gip of mine is a fine little hound and a powerhouse in the field. She has no "performance faults", but does have some minor conformation faults and will nip and growl on a lead strap.
That I can live with.

If you have hounds that run like her, no faults in thier conformation, and has manners on a lead strap. Please price them to me.

so u are justifing a bitting dog. i glad we dont hunt, cause she wouldnt bite me more than once. if a hound or any other dog of mine dont have enough brains to be have when i have it on a lead then there is no reason to feed it or breed it.

u can take my post any way u want to. this is the very same reason rotts and pitts have a awful name. it only takes one cull to be breed to spread his unwanted jean poll.

Would much rather have a dog that shows a little backbone than one that will fall down peein on itself!!!

I have a little bitch that has to be the Alpha, at least amongst the girls. She's more bark than bite (wicked demonic, lol) and we've grown accustomed to it and unless she is really terrorizing the other Beagle we let them work it out. She just wants to be taken seriously and she doesn't want anyone else (K9) taking her stuff. I think it's just "the way of the pack." We keep the real young 'uns away from her though.

<---This one is my Laurie -- she is mid pack and if you want to fight her she becomes very offended and honks like a goose. I just love this bitch!

I could not live with it and sure would not breed it.To me it is a performance fault .

we are talking about hounds on a lead. he said nips i take that as nipping any thing around including a human. i keep hounds when they are on a lead they are thinking about getting lose and hunting, not trying to get in a fight.

If I wanted dogs that want to bite and growl at everything I would get a different breed. I have beagles to hunt not fight, if they have a problem in the kennel I might overlook it unless it gets out of hand, but in the field, box or on a leash it shouldn't be tolerated period. I don't care if they have no backbone because I have them to hunt, and as long as they do that I could care less if some dog thinks it can whip mine.
