I pulled in the driveway last night and as the headlights came across my field I seen two rabbits. One looked like a normal sized adult. The other was very small (about the size of a soda can). He appeared to only be around 2 months old. We have had enough un-natural warm spells that their biological timer may be going off early. Then again I am not a professional biologist either.

I believe they will be bred in February to allow their first litters to start around the beginning of spring where the foilage will have started growing. Mother Natures way of helping them get a fair start. A rabbit breeder told me this because this is when he will trap them around the later part of February then stock his running areas with them to keep his pens and running areas stocked. Now this applies to the Eastern Cottontail Rabbit..
Yes, deer are born like this also. I wonder if this warm weather will mess up rabbit cycles though? Supposed to be 73 in Northern VA todayCottontail Chaser wrote:I believe they will be bred in February to allow their first litters to start around the beginning of spring where the foilage will have started growing. We shot a few deer this a.m. and we're done deer hunting until the weather cools back down. Today was the last day for antlered deer. There's still another month of firearms antlerless in my county and in one county north, 2 months of archery antlerless.

Well my kids' 2 pet rabbits (that were supposed to both be males) have created 4 baby bunnies! So that should be lots of fun
These may be some strange looking bunnies too, as the parents were a Holland Lop and a Dutch. But, hey, the kids were excited!
Haven't noticed any wild babies around here though.

I have seen a few really small rabbits, but not really baby size. But they still didnt look half grown yet. Dogs ran them good though. So dont know.
