New Indiana rabbit and squirrel hunting seasons
---------------------------------------------------

New Indiana rabbit and squirrel hunting seasons will become law on Feb. 7, 2007.

On Feb. 7, Indiana will have one simplified statewide squirrel season, running from Aug. 15 to Jan. 31. The squirrel season in northern Indiana has been stretched about a month -- until Jan. 31, in order to provide additional hunting opportunities.

New rule changes will also extend the Indiana rabbit season to Feb. 15, except at state fish & wildlife areas and reservoirs. Each year, the new rabbit season will run from the first Friday of November after Nov. 3, through Feb. 15 of the following year.

Because of the timing of the new rules taking effect, rabbit season will end this winter on Jan. 31, but will again be legal from Feb. 7 through Feb. 15.

Rabbit season at state fish and wildlife areas (with the exception of Goose Pond FWA) and reservoir properties, will still run from Oct. 1 to Jan. 31.

"Extending squirrel and rabbit seasons later into winter will give Hoosier hunters more hunting opportunities without hurting Indiana's general rabbit or squirrel populations," said DNR wildlife chief Wayne Bivans.

The Indiana Natural Resources Commission took public comments on these rule change proposals and held a public hearing last year on these new rabbit and squirrel hunting seasons. The NRC gave the rule changes final approval last November, and they become law on Feb. 7 of this year, along with a few other rule changes. The rule language can be found under "2006 Wildlife Administrative Rule Changes"at:

3) 312 IAC 9-3-16: Extends the season for taking rabbits statewide, except for the DNR properties listed,
from January 31 to February 15. These two additional weeks would provide additional hunting
opportunities and not be likely to affect rabbit populations due to the extremely high reproductive potential
of eastern cottontail rabbits. The changes also list the DNR properties, in alphabetical order, where rabbit
hunting can take place from October 1 through December 31. All fish and wildlife areas and reservoirs are
included except for Goose Pond.

Pay special attn to the bold.

At the top it says Except the listed properties and at the bottom it says All are included except Goose pond.

Also notice the Date DECEMBER 31. Is this a typo or did we just loose a whole month of state property hunting?

Someone with authority needs to explain this!

Keith,
Indiana's rabbit season ended 1-31-07. the new law Does not start till 2-7-07 and goes out 2-15-07 and you might check the rules for state land for this time of year.

State land ends and will continue to end on January 31st. Nothing changes at all on state land! It ONLY affects private land (except for Goose Pond).

To more simplify this, ALL state properties “that in past years” that have had an October 1st through January 31st season are going to continue in the same manor. NOTHING CHANGES!

All other property (private or public) in Indiana that has opened in the past the first Friday of November after Nov. 3, and continued to stay open until January 31st are what this NEW law effects.

Please don't confuse each other. We (Indiana Beaglers Alliance) have worked with the IDNR for 2+ years trying to get the season extended.

Hey Kid , Dont get me wrong, I just dont want to get a ticket for hunting when or where I am not legeal while thinking I am.
Keystone Kid wrote:State land ends and will continue to end on January 31st. Nothing changes at all on state land! It ONLY affects private land (except for Goose Pond).
In one sentence it says THE SEASON IS EXTENDED STATEWIDE EXCEPT FOR THE DNR PROPERTIES LISTED
SO THIS WOULD SOUND LIKE PRIVATE LAND IS WHAT IS BEING DESCRIBED FROM JAN 31 - FEB 15
Keystone Kid wrote:To more simplify this, ALL state properties “that in past years” that have had an October 1st through January 31st season are going to continue in the same manor. NOTHING CHANGES!
THE ARTICLE I POSTED CAME DIRECTLY FROM THE DNR WEB PAGE AND AS SEEN IN THE LOWER BOLD AREA IT SAYS HUNTING ON LISTED DNR PROPERTIES ENDS DEC 31 THEN EXCLUDES GOOSE POND.
Keystone Kid wrote:All other property (private or public) in Indiana that has opened in the past the first Friday of November after Nov. 3, and continued to stay open until January 31st are what this NEW law effects.
ANOTHER QUESTION I HAVE NOW IS YOU LIST PUBLIC HERE .....WHERE ELSE IS THERE PUBLIC LAND OTHER THAN WHAT THEY LISTED?

I AM NOT TRYING TO CONFUSE ANYONE JUST TRYING TO STAY OUT OF TROUBLE WITH THE DNR. I ALSO HAVE A POST IN THE LEGISLATION SECTION THAT SPEAKS OF WHEN I TRIED TO GET AN ANSWER FROM DNR AND WAS TREATED VERY POORLY.

Hey Kid,
I contacted her and she verifys what you have said and she agree it was a little confusing but claims that was due to the timing and feels it will be clearer next year when it is the book.
Thanks, Hunter
