2006 US PP WINNER - PPGRCH. PEA RIDGE SIR WINSTON

Post by kevin »

For those of you that may not have heard the news yet.. Winston started showing signs of getting sick Saturday morning before I loaded him to go to the trial in Somerville. He seemed to be okay at the trial but Sunday morning I knew something was wrong. I got him to the Vet Monday morning and the test are showing kidney failure. They're giving him lots of fluids through an IV hoping to flush all this out.. Right now when they run new test on his kidneys the counts are still off the chart. I'm hoping for a MIRICLE but it doesn't look good. KD

Sorry to hear about that.

Seems to be alot of good hounds dieing because of their kidneys shutting down.

I hope he snaps out of it.

I dont know what to think about all these fine hounds having kidney trouble. Winston sure is a fine one. I had the pleasure of judging him a few weeks ago after hearing about him but never seeing him run. The word that comes to mind is IMPRESSIVE. Never getting flusted by other fine Grands in that cast and just sticking to his game. He caught two rabbits in that one cast and kept the track going when things got tough. KD i hope they get him straightend out. He has still got hunts to win, rabbits to chase and pups to sire.

Kevin,
I hope everything works out. Can I ask what kind of feed you use and the protien and fat content? He'll be in our prayers.
good luck, Paul Greenwood

We took our champion female to the vet about a month ago b/c she was not acting right. They ran tests on her and told us that she too has failing kidneys. She has 25% of her kidneys left. They have her on KD dog food ($45 for a 20lb bag or $2.55 a can and of course we cannot get her to eat the dry!) and they say that it will slow the process down. He told us that we could have anywhere between a few months to a few more good years with her. We are still running her but she is not the same and she never will be.

Good luck to you and Winston.

First off, sorry to hear about Winston, hope things get better. Also, do the vets think high protein dogfood might be the cause? My vet has been on me about getting off the 26% and going to 21%.

The vet told us that high protein dog food it CAN be the culprit, but in our female it is hereditary...could be something to check into.

Paul, I've been feeding Hi-Pro 27/15.. Don't know exactly what caused it but they are giving him no hope.. I've got to make a decision tomorrow on what to do.. I called Med-Vet Emergency clinic today in Memphis and got a second opinion.. I got pretty much the same answers. The blood work on normal kidneys should read 35 and Winston's read 190. Since Monday he's gotten a bag of fluids every day hoping to flush his kidneys and still the number hasn't came down any. I hate to pull the plug if there's any hope..

Winston was put to sleep today.. it was a very hard decision to have to make. Winston showed he was a true fighter...whether it was in the field or his last days. Not one day did I ever see him give up.. But he was slowly wasting away on the inside. I'm going to miss him with that fast chop mouth POUNDING a rabbit...
