running with a houndsman

Post by jlboomer »

well i had the pleasure the other night to run dogs with a man that i consider a houndsman. he is the type of guy that will run his hounds every chance he gets and is dedicated enough that he fenced in his own running pen do to his work he runs mostly at night but he runs his hounds about 4 to 5 nights and week and then runs every sunday morning out of the pen. this guy doesn't field trial dosent care if he even kills any rabbits and definitly doesn't care about papers but the funny thing is he has some of the nicest registerd dogs you'll find hes gotten some bigtime breed pups from people that has given up on the or not put in the time they needed. now i really don't get to run my dogs as much as id like to and i used to be as dedicated as this guy but work and family changed alot of that for me. we turned loose at 7pm the other night and didn't call in the dogs until 2am my dogs where tired his dogs he said could go on for a few more hours its hard to really put into words but those where some of the finest dogs id seen and you know that guy could still pick faults from everyone of them. i talked to him about breeding he said he'd breed his best to dogs together if he needed more dogs to run or just go buy started dogs he mainly keep males and he gutted these dogs. people like this man inspire me to wana work more with my hounds and that its true the more time in the woods the better your hounds i will leave you with this he showed me a male beagle he gave $50 for at 15months old they said he wasn't trial material this dog is northway breed top and bottom well a year after he bought the dog the same guys offered him $1000 for him back they asked what hed done to the dog he just looked at them and said quote " i just let him run" run this mad does i think he averages about 40hrs a week with his hounds. thats a houndsman if i ever seen one.

Joey , you didn't run with Timmy Hoskins did ya  ? He told me once that he ran 8 days a week  . I think we would all like to be able to run dogs everyday, but you gotta be willing to sacrifice something,, job, family , etc..... You hit it on the head though, if you want to make a dog you gotta putem on the ground. Wish I had the time.

Because of my limited running time for the past 4 years none of the hounds that I have been running started much before their first birthdays and some just after. It has taken me until they are 2 to become finished, but I have had no difficulties with them bringing them along this slowly, other than needing extreme patience and having to set aside the frustration factor. Anyone else, because of circumstances beyond your control, ever experience this?

I guess, for those of us with rabbit hounds, you ran with what we hope to be.

After 36 days in a row running dogs, all I can say is--give me 36 more.
